The Cleveland Browns made the first draft-day trade, trading with the Kansas City Chiefs.
Cleveland acquired the ninth overall selection, the 74th overall pick (third-round), and the 148th overall pick (fifth-round) for the sixth overall pick. It was an interesting move from the Browns, who opted to trade down and pick up more assets to either select players or use the picks as ammo to move up later on in the draft.
Following the trade down, the Browns selected Utah Utes offensive tackle Spencer Fano at ninth overall. NFL insider Albert Breer reported that Fano was going to be the Browns’ pick at sixth overall had the Chiefs not traded up.
“The Browns were going to take Utah OT Spencer Fano at 6, I’m told. Instead, they get him at 9, and third- and fifth-round picks for their trouble,” Breer wrote on X.
Fano played three years at Utah and was a three-year starter, showing he can play left and right tackle. Cleveland traded for Tytus Howard from the Houston Texans earlier this offseason to be the right tackle, so Fano likely projects to be the Browns’ starting left tackle.
NFL World Reacts to Browns-Chiefs Trade
Cleveland made the first trade of the 2026 NFL Draft, and many Browns fans were happy with the move.
The Browns had been rumored to want to trade down from sixth overall anyway, and the team succeeded and still was able to select Fano.
“Great trade – trade down just 3 slots from 6th pick in draft to 9th pick – and still prob get same guy – top OL – and get a 3rd & 5th round pick for it,” a fan wrote on X.
“Its a perfectly fine trade. We arent picking top 5. We move back 3 spots to still the guy they probably already wanted (Fano I imagine) They get more picks to either build or use for trading back up in the 1st/2nd,” a fan added.
“No way browns out here fleecing Andy Reid like this,” a fan wrote.
Many fans seem to think the Browns fleeced the Chiefs as Cleveland was able to pick two extra picks for moving down three spots, and still getting to pick whatever tackle they wanted.
“I like this a lot for the Browns, who can still get a top OL at pick 9, and add a 3rd and 5th,” a fan wrote.
“Whew, expensive,” a fan added.
The Browns now have 11 total picks in the 2026 NFL Draft.
Browns Fans React to Fano Pick
After the trade down, Cleveland ended up selecting Spencer Fano out of Utah.
Fano projects to be a Day 1 starter for the Browns at offensive tackle, and fans were pleased with the selection.
“Let’s go!!! Buys Shedeur a little bit more time for me to get open out there,” a fan wrote.
“This pick is legendary! Trade down. Pick up 2 picks and get your guy!,” a fan added.
Other fans, however, weren’t pleased with the selection and felt like Cleveland should have selected Caleb Downs.
“Caleb Downs was right there, tears,” a fan wrote.
“How does Andrew Berry still have a job?,” a fan added.
“God damn it! You had Downs sitting there for the taking!,” a fan wrote.
The Browns will be on the clock at 24th overall.
