Devin Williams Reacts After Mets Lose 12th Straight Game

New York Mets closer Devin Williams shared his reaction after the Mets lost their 12th straight game on Tuesday against the Minnesota Twins.

Williams entered a tied 3-3 game in the ninth inning, and proceeded to have about as disastrous a pitching performance as any reliever in baseball has had this year. Without securing an out, Williams allowed three walks, a sac bunt, and a single, as the Twins scored two runs and took the lead for good. The Mets have now lost an MLB-worst 12 games in a row, and they have the worst record in the majors despite having the second-biggest payroll behind the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Following the game, the media spoke to Williams about the Mets’ current losing skid, and the veteran relief pitcher admitted the team’s historically bad start to the year is weighing on him.

“It’s tough. I don’t know, I’ve never been a part of something like this. I think we just need to get the one win out of the way and I think everything else will take care of itself, but it’s obviously proving pretty difficult right now,” Williams said (via SNY).

For his part, Williams said the team knows where they stand, and they hope to snap their losing skid tomorrow and start fresh.

“Every day is a new day, right? We have a chance to win a game every day. Right now, everyone knows the situation and it’s just kind of stacking on top of each other,” Williams said.

Devin Williams Has Had a Horrific Start to His New York Mets Career

The Mets signed Williams during the offseason to a three-year, $51 million contract. After former longtime closer Edwin Diaz signed with the Dodgers, Williams became the Mets’ de facto closer. However, his short stint with the Mets has been nothing but awful. Through his first eight appearances this year, Williams has an ugly 9.95 ERA. Statistically speaking, he is one of the worst relievers in baseball this year, and it’s worrisome because he was also awful last year for the New York Yankees in his lone season in pinstripes. Before coming to New York, Williams was one of baseball’s top relievers during his six years with the Milwaukee Brewers, but based on his two seasons with the Yankees and Mets, it appears that he doesn’t have what it takes to pitch in a big market where there is more pressure to win.

New York Mets Will Have a Difficult Time Making the Postseason

The Mets dropped their 12th game in a row on Tuesday, dropping to 7-16 this year, the worst record in the major leagues. To make matters worse, the Mets are on the wrong side of history, as no MLB team has ever made the playoffs when they lost 12 games in a row during the season. This is not what the Mets expected coming into the season, as the team has one of the heftiest payrolls in the game. Right now, the Mets are the worst team in the league, and a playoff spot seems to be out of reach just one month into the season.

Manager Carlos Mendoza was recently deemed safe to keep his job by Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns, but as the losses keep mounting and the fans keep booing, the Mets may be forced to make a move in their coaching staff to shake things up.
