Following the conclusion of the Golden State Warriors‘ season, questions continue to arise about the future of head coach Steve Kerr as the franchise’s leader.
Kerr showed signs of an emotional end to his tenure in the final minutes of the Warriors’ season. The coach subbed out Stephen Curry and Draymond Green in the final minutes of the season, pulled them aside, and said he doesn’t know what’s next for the franchise but that he loves them.
Brett Siegel of CluthPoints reports that Warriors owner Joe Lacob and general manager Mike Dunleavy will meet with Steve Kerr later this week.
“Among the immediate topics: Kerr’s future and the team’s philosophy moving forward,” Siegel wrote.
Steve Kerr ‘has Known for Weeks That He’s Done Coaching the Warriors’
The start of the 2025-26 season sparked conversations about Steve Kerr’s future as the head coach of the Golden State Warriors. This season was the last of his contract, and Kerr was comfortable with the situation he was in.
“There’s no reason for discussion or concern. This is kind of a point in our relationship where it’s like, let’s just see how it is at the end of the year… I love my job; I love what I’m doing every day, and I can’t wait to get to the building. Hopefully I’m here for another few years, but I think it makes sense for the organization and for me just to see where this thing is at the end of the year, where they are, where I am.” Kerr said back in October.
Fast forward through an injury-plagued season for the franchise that resulted in a 37-45 record. These comments seem to carry less weight after being eliminated from title contention.
The Chicago Sun-Times’ Joe Cowley said he’s spoken with people close to Steve Kerr.
“The coach has known for weeks he was done,” Cowley said.
Monte Poole of NBC Sports mentioned that the “general belief” around the franchise is that Kerr will be “comfortably jobless” after meeting with Joe Lacob and Mike Dunleavy. Although there is a “very slight chance” of him returning for another season.
The two sides are set to make a decision on Kerr’s future within the next few days. This could possibly be the end of one of the most iconic runs in NBA history.
Looking Back on Steve Kerr’s Tenure With the Warriors
Steve Kerr’s tenure with the Golden State Warriors is historic. The Warriors have won four NBA championships (2015, 2017, 2018, 2022) and made six Finals appearances since Kerr was hired in 2012.
He won the NBA Coach of the Year Award in 2015-16 after leading Golden State to the most successful regular season record in league history, finishing 73-9.
Kerr is also the winningest head coach in franchise history, having 604 wins as of the end of 2025-26.
Kerr was also named to the league’s 15 greatest coaches of all-time list in 2022. Joining others named to the list, like Larry Brown, Phil Jackson, and Gregg Popovich.
Whether Steve Kerr decides to retire or move on to coaching another team, the 60-year-old has definitely made a name for himself during his time as a player and coach in the NBA.
