U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), today at the Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs, asked President Trump’s Fed chair nominee, Kevin Warsh, to name “just one” aspect of Trump’s economic agenda with which he disagrees.
[NOTE: Warren prefaced her question by saying that “President Trump has made clear that he does not want an independent Fed. He has said, ‘anybody that disagrees with me will never be Fed Chairman.’ And he’s made sure that you (she pointed to Warsh) are his sock puppet.”]
Sen. @ewarren: Trump has made clear that he does not want an independent Fed. He has said, “anybody that disagrees with me will never be Fed Chair.” Can you name one aspect of Trump’s economic agenda you disagree with?

Warsh eventually answered the question by saying: “I do actually have a disagreement with the President, Senator. I think, even this morning, he said that he thought I was out of central casting. I think central casting, I’d look older and greyer and show up here maybe with a cigar of sorts.”
Warren responded, “Quite adorable. But you know we need a Fed Chair who is independent. That’s the only way we preserve the independence of the Federal Reserve.”
The Senator added, “If you can’t answer these questions, you don’t have the courage and you don’t have the independence.”
Economist Justin Wolfers agrees with Warren. Responding to the exchange, he wrote: “Kevin Warsh just lost me. He argues he’s going to be an independent Fed Chair, but refuses to acknowledge that Trump lost the 2020 election. If you can’t state simple facts when you’re in the political spotlight, you aren’t independent. You’re a coward.”
[NOTE: The standard reply for all Trump nominees facing the election question is not to acknowledge Trump’s loss but to say only that Joe Biden was “certified” and served as President.]
