Former Steelers HC Mike Tomlin Makes Next Move Official

After an impressive 18-year run with the Pittsburgh Steelers, one-time Super Bowl-winning head coach Mike Tomlin decided to step down from his post with the storied franchise.

Most believed that Tomlin would simply find another job in the NFL to continue his coaching career, as he’d receive plenty of interest around the league, much like John Harbaugh, who ended up landing with the New York Giants after his similarly long stint with the Baltimore Ravens.

Although Tomlin would’ve likely had his fair share of options to continue coaching, he has chosen to go in a different direction for the time being, following in the footsteps of Bill Cowher, whom he replaced in Pittsburgh in 2007.

According to Andrew Marchand of The Athletic, Tomlin will be a studio analyst for NBC.

Mike Tomlin, one of the most intriguing NFL TV prospects in years, is headed to NBC to be a top studio analyst on its Sunday night pregame show, “Football Night in America,” sources briefed on the move told The Athletic on Tuesday.

Tomlin will be a welcome addition to NBC, bringing a unique personality and perspective to the network, and could set himself up for a long career in this space, much like Cowher has since leaving the Steelers.

The question now is whether this is a long-term situation for Tomlin or if he could jump back into coaching in the near future, as he’ll likely get offers in the years to come with opportunities arising in the NFL.

For how long is now the question, as Tomlin could conceivably return to coaching. His predecessor with the Steelers, Bill Cowher, walked away from coaching at 49 in 2007. He went to CBS and, though mentioned for many coaching jobs over the years, Cowher, now 68, has remained on “The NFL Today.” Tomlin will likely have to similarly grapple whether or not to coach again.

Only time will tell what the future holds for Tomlin in a coaching capacity, but for the time being, he’ll be with NBC trying to carve out a new chapter in his football career.

The wait continues for the Steelers on whether four-time NFL MVP quarterback Aaron Rodgers will return for another season in Pittsburgh.

Rodgers still hasn’t given word to the storied franchise about his immediate future, with Steelers general manager Omar Khan giving the following update on the veteran signal-caller, according to Mark Kaboly of The Pat McAfee Show.

“We have had some great communication with Aaron,” Khan said. “Nothing has changed, but it all has been positive and good. He knows how we feel about him and we know how he feels about us.”

Although the consensus seems to be that Rodgers will return for the 2026 campaign, the waiting game has to be getting old for the Steelers’ brass at this point, even though they clearly want him back under center next season.
