NASCAR Cup Series: Denny Hamlin’s Kansas Control Slips Away Late

Denny Hamlin looked set for a clear win in the NASCAR Cup Series AdventHealth 400 at Kansas Speedway on Sunday, but a late caution forced overtime and changed everything. The Joe Gibbs Racing driver led 131 laps in the No. 11 Toyota and controlled most of the race.

He won Stage 1 and stayed out front through long green-flag runs. With only a few laps left, a crash brought out the yellow flag and erased his lead. The field reset for overtime, and Hamlin had to fight for position on the restart. He dropped back in the final laps and finished fourth, despite leading the most laps in this NASCAR Cup Series race.

Late Caution Shifts NASCAR Cup Series Outcome

The race turned when a late incident involving Cody Ware, who was several laps down, occurred. The crash brought out a caution with little time remaining. Officials reset the field and sent the race into overtime, changing the direction of the NASCAR Cup Series event.

Tyler Reddick, driving for 23XI Racing, started from the pole and stayed strong through the final restart to win. Kyle Larson finished second, while Chase Briscoe took third. Hamlin lost ground during the restart and could not recover in the short run to the finish.

The caution changed the race from a long-run battle into a short sprint. Hamlin had built his lead over time, but the overtime restart placed him in close traffic. The field bunched up, and positions changed quickly in the closing laps of the NASCAR Cup Series race.

Denny Hamlin Details Costly Final Laps

After the race, Denny Hamlin explained what went wrong late in the NASCAR Cup Series event. He pointed to the caution and restart as key moments.

“I mean, the most frustrating part is not winning. Having Cody Ware, six laps down, wreck just added to it. Everything kind of stacked up at the end.”

He also admitted to a mistake while trying to defend his position.

“I fell for the same move that the No. 5 got me with a couple of years ago when I was on the inside. That’s on me. I’ve got to learn from those mistakes and execute better in the closing laps.”

Hamlin confirmed he hit the wall during the final run.

“Yeah, I did get into the wall. I had a big run off Turn 2, and I think the 19 was on four tires. There wasn’t much room, but I wasn’t going to lift. I ended up hitting the wall, but it didn’t really affect where I finished.”

Points Keep Hamlin in NASCAR Cup Series Hunt

Despite the result, Hamlin added strong points in the NASCAR Cup Series standings. He earned 52 points and now sits second overall. He trails Reddick by 105 points after nine races this season.

The race showed Hamlin’s pace across long runs. He led more laps than anyone and stayed near the front all day. The late caution changed the final result, but the performance still added to his consistent start in the NASCAR Cup Series.

As the season progresses, the standings remain close. Each result matters as drivers build position toward the playoffs. Hamlin leaves Kansas with solid points, even if the result did not match the race he controlled.
