Dexter Lawrence Standoff With Giants Reaches Critical Point After ‘Impasse’ News

The New York Giants have a difficult situation on their hands as they head into the John Harbaugh era, with star nose tackle Dexter Lawrence unhappy with his current contract with the team.

Lawrence has informed the Giants’ brass that he’d like to be traded due to his desire to be paid what the current market is in the NFL for a player of his caliber at his position. This puts the Giants in a bind, as they’ll either have to come to terms on a new deal two years early or find best trade package available in exchange for one of their elite defensive players.

As more time goes on after Lawrence’s trade demand, it seems more and more likely that he will get moved ahead of the 2026 NFL season.

The latest update on Lawrence’s status with the Giants comes from Connor Hughes of SNY, who mapped out the current situation in New York.

“Here’s my understanding of where things stand with Dexter Lawrence,” Hughes wrote. “He wants a new deal that reflects the current IDL market. If not, a trade. There is not an insane push from the Giants. From their perspective: He’s under contract for two more seasons. They will try to come to a resolution that works for both, but they don’t have to do anything.

“If they can’t, this is not a situation where they’ll take the best of whatever trade offers they get. This is very similar to the Jets-Quinnen Williams deal at the trade deadline. Williams requested a trade three times, wanting his contract reworked. The Jets were not moving him until they got an offer they couldn’t refuse from Dallas (2026 2, 2027 1, Mazi Smith). We’ll see if an offer the Giants can’t say no to comes in before the draft.”

With Lawrence being a two-time All-Pro, there’s likely to be no shortage of interest in his services, especially ahead of the 2026 NFL Draft, where the phone lines are open with teams more willing to make moves.

With Lawrence still under contract for two more years, the Giants don’t seem to feel compelled to work on a new deal with the 28-year-old, which might ultimately lead to a trade.

According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, the Giants are an “impasse” with this situation with Lawrence, and Dan Duggan of The Athletic explains the reasoning behind that.

“That we’re still hearing about how there are two years left on Dex’s deal answers why there’s an impasse,” Duggan wrote. “I understand the Giants wanting to just ride out the contract. But that’s just not tenable at this point.

“…Again, to me, it just comes down to their evaluation of him as a player going forward. If they think he’ll return to form, give him a raise that gets him over the $26M/year DTs. All we hear about is how healthy the cap situation is in the future, so they can afford to splurge if they believe he’s still a dominant force. And if they don’t think he’s that player anymore, makes sense to trade him for the best return you can get now.”

Only time will tell how things pan out in New York, but a trade could be on the horizon.
