Lions Crack Door on Blockbuster Draft-Day Trade for Super Bowl Player

The Detroit Lions have been flirting with a Super Bowl appearance for past several years, and general manager Brad Holmes just made it clear he is open to any means of acquiring any player who might put the organization over the top.

Speaking with media members ahead of the upcoming NFL draft, a reporter asked Holmes if he is willing to forego the top draft assets at his disposal to land an elite performer who could catapult Detroit into its first Super Bowl in franchise history.

“Absolutely, yeah. If it’s the right guy,” Holmes responded. “If we have that kind of conviction for a player, absolutely. We’re gonna go and get him.”

Lions Could Explore Trade for Pass-Rusher Maxx Crosby

Detroit has a stacked team already, with a few considerable holes at edge-rusher opposite Aidan Hutchinson and the left tackle position following the release of 10-year starter Taylor Decker at his request earlier this offseason.

The Lions hold the No. 17 pick in Round 1 of this year’s draft, as well as No. 50 in Round 2. The team also owns its first- and second-round selections in 2027, which is shaping up as one of the best all-around classes in some time.

Holmes’ willingness to move major capital coupled with the Lions’ available assets over the next two years could put Detroit in the mix for any number of players who might provide the Super Bowl boost the franchise seeks.

It is a well-known fact that edge-rusher Maxx Crosby was available, as the Las Vegas Raiders traded him to the Ravens for two first-round picks before Baltimore ultimately backed out of that agreement citing a failed physical.

Trade talks around Crosby have quieted since, but the Raiders spent a ton of money in free agency while believing he was on his way out, and the Ravens’ reasoning regarding the health of Crosby’s surgically-repaired knee has been questioned by several prominent figures in and around the league.

Las Vegas isn’t going to sell low on the five-time Pro Bowler, but the Lions could feasibly get into the mix for Crosby ahead of/during the draft or as the regular season nears, and they could perhaps do so at a price lower than the two first-rounders Baltimore initially agreed to pay.

Trent Williams Could Shift Balance for Lions in Super Bowl Pursuit

Another elite player and trade candidate Detroit could pursue is left tackle Trent Williams of the San Francisco 49ers.

Williams is a 12-time Pro Bowler who will play next season at 38 years old but is also coming off a second-team All-Pro campaign in 2025. He remains elite at his position and has one year left on his contract.

The 49ers are working to convince Williams to restructure his deal and lower its $46.3 million salary cap hit, but those talks don’t appear to have gotten far over the several months since the two sides first engaged.

If worse comes to worse, San Francisco could shop Williams, and the 17th pick would be an exceedingly fair offer for a player of his age and salary. The Lions would take on $33 million in 2026 by acquiring Williams with a post-June 1 designation.
