49ers Host Top-30 Visit With All-Big 12 Offensive Lineman

The San Francisco 49ers have multiple positions they need to address in the 2026 NFL Draft. Now that the 49ers and All-Pro left tackle Trent Williams are in an ongoing contract dispute, the 49ers could select an offensive lineman with their No. 27 pick.

A player that the 49ers could use their first-round pick on is Utah offensive lineman Caleb Lomu. The left tackle took a top-30 visit on Tuesday, Apr. 14, at Levi’s Stadium.

What Caleb Lomu Could Add to the 49ers’ O-Line?

Lomu could start at left tackle for the 49ers if they can’t come to a resolution with Trent Williams’ contract. Or Lomu could slide to left guard if Williams returns and move back to left tackle after Williams’ retirement.

Lomu is a First-Team All-Big 12 started 12 games at left tackle for the Utes in 2025. He also started all 12 games at left tackle for Utah in 2024.

Lomu measured in at 6’ 6” and 313 lbs at the NFL Draft Combine. He also ranked 3rd among combine offensive linemen in production score (76) and 5th in athleticism score (86), according to NFL Next Gen Stats.

NFL Analyst, Lance Zierlein, noted some of Lomu’s strengths and weaknesses:

Strengths:

  • Good frame with room for more muscle mass.
  • Very athletic getting out of stance and into lead pulls or cut-off blocks.
  • Activates hands with good quickness in both phases.
  • Core strength to keep from having his pads rattled on contact.
  • Pass sets with good posture, rarely ducking head and leaning.
  • Uses different punch approaches and times them well to maximize his length.
  • Shows ability to gather and control rushers with strong grip.
  • Sifts through games/blitzes and responds with no panic.

Weaknesses:

  • Gallops and opens his outer half too quickly against speed rushers.
  • Better harmony needed between his hands and feet.
  • Footwork can get sloppy mirroring inside moves and counters.
  • Still learning to find lateral landmarks in the run game.
  • Can be out of control and miss his positioning when fitting run blocks.
  • Needs to keep improving upper-body strength.
  • Below average with sustain and finish consistency.

49ers Have a Hole at Left Guard

The 49ers have some work to do on the left side of their offensive line. They lost offensive lineman Spencer Burford after he signed with the Raiders in free agency. Burford played in 11 games and started 9 games at left guard. Also, contract discussions with left tackle Trent Williams are still unsettled.

“I think left guard is going to be a competition,” 49ers GM John Lynch told reporters at the NFL Annual League Meeting. “And I don’t think we’re done there yet… So I think things are going to be wide open.”

The 49ers have made two additions to their offensive line group this offseason. They signed Vederian Lowe, whom the 49ers envision as their swing tackle. They also signed Robert Jones, who missed the 2025 season with a neck injury. But Jones could fill the hole at left guard. He has 1,735 career snaps at left guard.

Other Prospects Who Took a Top-30 Visit

Lomu is one of two offensive linemen who have taken a top-30 visit with the 49ers. But the 49ers may have their eye on a wide receiver with their first-round pick. San Francisco has hosted five different receivers on a visit so far, according to CBS Sports.

List of every player to take a top-30 visit with the 49ers:

  • OT Travis Burke (Memphis)
  • WR Omar Cooper Jr. (Indiana)
  • EDGE Romello Height (Texas Tech)
  • WR Denzel Boston (Washington)
  • WR Jordan Hudson (SMU)
  • WR KC Concepcion (Texas A&M)
