Yankees-Nationals Trade Pitch Offloads Jasson Dominguez for All-Star Infielder

The million-dollar question surrounding the New York Yankees on the trade front is what they will do with outfielder Jasson Dominguez, who is currently in Triple-A, and may not have a runway to the majors this season with the Yankees’ outfielders blocking his path.

SI.com’s Ryan Shea recently proposed an MLB mock trade between the Yankees and Washington Nationals, which would send Jasson Dominguez and Cade Smith to the nation’s capital in exchange for All-Star shortstop CJ Abrams. Abrams has steadily been linked to the Yankees, who are still awaiting the return of Anthony Volpe, but even when Volpe returns, Abrams might be a better middle-infield option.

Here are the official trade details, as proposed by Shea:

“Nationals Acquire: OF Jasson Domínguez, RHP Cade Smith

Yankees Acquire: SS CJ Abrams”

Jasson Dominguez is pretty much a bona fide Triple-A + player, which means he’s almost too good for the minors, but has struggled in some limited MLB action.

CJ Abrams might be en route to his second All-Star appearance in 2026 after his strong start to the season. Abrams is hitting .327 with five home runs (one off Paul Skenes) and 17 runs batted in. It would be a very welcome addition to an already potent Yankees lineup.

With the Nationals being potential sellers come the summer months, expect Abrams’ name to be tossed around a healthy amount to be dealt to an MLB contender that is looking for a middle infielder with power and speed.

Who Says ‘No’ In this Trade Prediction?

CJ Abrams

Well, it would be hard to imagine the Yankees saying no in this mock trade idea, where they offload Jasson Dominguez (who doesn’t have a current role with the major league team) and a prospect for CJ Abrams, who has steady big-league experience and seems to be getting better into his prime.

Abrams is a controllable player due to his contract/arbitration status, and if the Nationals do think about trading him, this seems like a fair trade package, but Washington may demand another MLB-ready player. Dominguez has has some success in MLB, which strengthens his trade case.

As always, speculation is fun around this time of year, and it will be interesting to see what sort of trade buzz surrounds ‘The Martian’ in the coming months.

It’s also important to note that Dominguez himself may benefit from being traded.
