NY Rangers Rumors: Clear Path to Maple Leafs Captain, Insider

An interesting twist of NY Rangers rumors could land the club the superstar center they’ve been looking for.

The Rangers could be looking to forego a rebuild this offseason, opting to double down on contending. To do so, the club will need to load up on offense and star power to overcome what was an otherwise lackluster season in 2025-26.

That could mean making a pitch for a big-name piece like the club tried to do with Quinn Hughes this season.

One such big-ticket player who could become available is Toronto Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews. There is no indication at the moment that Matthews could be on the trade block. But NY Rangers rumors suggest that situation could change depending on how next season goes in Toronto.

If things go south in a hurry for the Maple Leafs, the organization might contemplate moving the Olympic gold medalist.

Therein lies the connection to the Rangers. As Vincent Mercogliano mused in an April 7 piece in The Athletic, the link to Mike Sullivan and J.T. Miller could be enough to entice Matthews to join his former Team USA coach and teammate.

Mercogliano also addressed another NY Rangers rumor by declaring that a similar situation could apply to Ottawa Senators captain Brady Tkachuk.

While the idea of adding Matthews or Tkachuk makes sense for the Blueshirts, the fact is that may be easier said than done. Mercogliano noted a crucial situation that could get in the way of either Matthews or Tkachuk landing on Broadway.

NY Rangers Rumors May Not Come True Because of This

As Mercogliano pointed out, the sheer willingness alone to come to New York won’t be enough to make these NY Rangers rumors come true. The Blueshirts may not have the assets to pull off this sort of deal.

“Of course, wanting those stars — or even recruiting them — doesn’t mean the Rangers have the ammunition to pull off a trade of that magnitude. They probably don’t, unless one of those players wields contractual power to force his way to New York.”

With that in mind, it might seem like a bit of a pipe dream to see either Matthews or Tkachuk on Broadway. Unless Matthews decides to pull off a Panarin-type move, the Rangers might not have the leverage to make a deal happen.

Still, NY Rangers rumors should continue to pick up simply because the allure of playing in New York may be too much to pass up.

Blueshirts May Still Opt to Rebuild

Even with all the NY Rangers rumors about targeting a big-name player, the club may still opt to rebuild. That seems like the least plausible path given what a rebuild entails.

If the Rangers were to go down this road, the sell-off would imply moving just about anyone who can fetch anything in return.

Most importantly, the dreaded “R” word could mean several lost seasons. That’s why the idea of a retool has to be the most enticing for the organization. After being two years removed from the Presidents’ Trophy, there has to be the idea that this core might have enough tread on its tires to make another run.

So, adding around the fringes plus one big name could make the difference between languishing again and becoming a playoff team.
