Knicks Exposed as Flawed Contenders Ahead of NBA Playoffs

The New York Knicks enter the playoffs with plenty of talent, but the questions around their ceiling refuse to go away. Danny Parkins recently made that point bluntly, saying he would “absolutely” pick the Cavaliers over New York for a deep postseason run because the Knicks simply do not look like a stable team.

The‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌ New York Knicks are definitely going to the playoffs with high hopes on their side, however, not everyone thinks that they can be the real contenders. Danny Parkins strongly argued the point that Cleveland has the higher potential and that the Knicks’ road is too uncertain to be counted on. He bases his critique on one basic notion: the Knicks have talent, but they have not looked reliable enough to be taken seriously as a deep-run team.

Parkins did not hold back when describing the Knicks. “The Knicks are not a consistent basketball team,” he said, before adding that they are “a flawed” team in how they are constructed.

He also pointed to the Brunson-Karl-Anthony Towns pairing, suggesting that playing them heavy playoff minutes together could become a defensive problem. Another line that stood out was his insistence that the Knicks have been streaky since New Year’s Eve, which is not the profile of a team built for four playoff rounds.

Is This Doubt Completely Fair?

Still,‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌ not everyone agrees with the criticism. The Knicks have earned a top-three seed in the playoffs and have proven that they can be unstoppable when everything falls into place . Players like Brunson keep showing up with big plays, and the team has demonstrated it’s able to defeat even the strongest teams on the right night.

New York has a good shot at beating Cleveland in a playoff series if their defense is solid and their stars come through in the clutch. It is true that they might not have the same level of consistency as, say, the Boston Celtics, but they are still very much a threat on the court.

That’s what makes the Knicks so intriguing. They possess the skills to go really far in the playoffs, but unless they show that they are able to keep it up, the notion of them being a “flawed contender” will just ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌stick.

Health Could Decide Everything for the Knicks

Injuries ‍might be the single factor that actually turns these worries into a reality.

The New York Knicks rely heavily on their starters. If a key player is sidelined, their performance can quickly sink. We have already seen signs of this.

Long-term injuries are their problem. They have been out of sync due to injuries to even role players. A scenario in which Jalen Brunson or Karl-Anthony Towns is injured could be disastrous for the Knicks, especially if they face playoff pressure.

On the other hand, this team is so talented that they can beat anyone, like the Cleveland Cavaliers.

That’s the trade-off: the upside is great, but the tolerance for mistakes is very ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌low.
