Alabama Football Fans Must Watch These 5 Defensive Players on A-Day

As the Alabama Crimson Tide football team prepares for its annual A-Day, much of the attention has centered on the offense, but the defense may be where some of the biggest statements are made.

Under Kalen DeBoer, Alabama is looking to reload on that side of the ball with a mix of young talent and emerging playmakers.

Here are five defensive players Crimson Tide fans should be watching closely during A-Day.

Linebacker Caleb Woodson

Caleb Woodson is an offseason transfer portal addition from Virgina Tech who has immediately become one of the leaders of the Alabama defense.

Woodson is a former defensive back turned linebacker, so he has elite athleticism and coverage skills for the off-ball linebacker position and can really cover from sideline to sideline.

The biggest question is how well he can hold out against a physical rushing attack. This kid has a chance to make a big splash during A-Day.

Defensive Lineman Steve Bolo Mboumoua

Best known as “Steve” on the team, Mboumoua has turned a lot of heads during spring practice. The redshirt sophomore is a physical freak, standing at 6-foot-4, 300 pounds with very little body fat.

Athletism has never been the question for Steve; it’s been whether or not he could ever grasp the fundamentals of playing along the defensive line. By all indications, he has begun to turn the corner and has shown more consistency up front for the Tide.

Steve is the type of player that, when the switch finally flips, could be special.

Defensive Back Ivan Taylor

If the last name Taylor rings a bell, it should. Ivan Taylor is the son of former NFL star Ike Taylor. The apple doesn’t fall from the tree with this one either. The second-year defensive back has had quite the spring for the Alabama defense.

With star safety Bray Hubbard being limited throughout the spring, Taylor has taken advantage of his opportunity and has quickly emerged as a guy who could earn significant playing time in 2026.

Outside Linebacker Desmond Umeozulu

Better known as Zulu, the South Carolina transfer has been a pass-rushing force for the Tide defense this spring.

Zulu has elite length, standing at 6-foot-6 with incredibly long arms, making him extremely difficult to block coming off the edge.

Watch for Zulu to make a lot of noise against Alabama’s new offensive tackles, Jackson Lloyd and Jayvin James.

Defensive Lineman Devan Thompkins

Alabama may have found its next superstar defensive lineman in Devan Thompkins. The USC transfer has received consistent praise from the Crimson Tide coaching staff this spring.

Thompkins offers a ton of versatility along the defensive front with his ability to play both on the interior and on the outside.

His blend of size, speed, and power makes him extremely difficult to block, and he may take over on Saturday.
