Broncos Owners Make Massive Move Into Major League Baseball

When it comes to money and spending it on professional sports, there doesn’t seem to be any limit for the Walton-Penner family.

“Sources confirm Broncos owners Greg and Carrie Penner are now MLB Colorado Rockies largest minority owners,” Denver 9 News reporter Mike Klis wrote on his official X account on Friday. “Dick, Charlie and Walker Monfort still have control. Penners still all in on Broncos but they now have roughly 40 percent of Rockies per sources.”

The Penners and Rob Walton bought the Broncos for approximately $4.6 billion in August 2022 and have led a massive turnaround for the franchise, which made it all the way to the AFC Championship Game following the 2025 season.

The Rockies have been 1 of Major League Baseball’s worst teams in the last decade. They haven’t had a winning season or made the postseason since 2018 and have lost over 100 games each of the last 3 seasons.

The Penner Sports Group, which bought the Rockies, is different from the Walton-Penner Family Ownership Group, which owns the Broncos — a group that includes Rob Walton, Condoleeza Rice, and Lewis Hamilton.

“Greg and Carrie Penner have bought a whopping 40% of the Rockies,” DNVR’s Zac Stevens wrote on his official X account. “This is HUGE for Colorado Sports!”

Broncos Have Richest Owners in Professional Sports

The Broncos being bought by the Walton-Penner Family may have secured their spot as 1 of the NFL’s elite teams in terms of spending for the next century.

In July 2024, Walton’s estimated net worth of $77.4 billion made him the richest owner in professional sports by quite a large margin and ranked him at No. 19 on the Forbes list of the richest people in the world.

Walton is the oldest son of Walmart founder Sam Walton, and the Walton family still owns half of Walmart’s overall stock. Younger brother Jim Walton was one spot ahead of him on the Forbes list with an estimated net worth of $78.4 billion.

Denver Broncos owner Rob Walton’s money is truly something to behold, with NFL writer Dov Kleiman showing Walton’s $77.4 estimated net worth as not only the most out of any NFL owner but by quite a large margin.

The “poorest” NFL owner and the only non-billionaire on the list was Cincinnati Bengals owner Mike Brown, with an estimated net worth of $925 million.

From Forbes: “(Rob Walton) retired as chairman in June 2015 and was replaced by his son-in-law, Greg Penner … He and other heirs of Sam Walton collectively own about half of Walmart’s stock. In June 2022, a group led by Walton agreed to buy the NFL’s Denver Broncos for $4.7 billion — a record for a sports franchise.”

Figuring Out How Much 40 Percent of Rockies Costs

The Rockies were valued at $1.68 billion in March 2026 — ranking them 25th out of a possible 30 MLB teams.

If we’re doing the caveman math for the deal for the Penners investing in the franchise, 40 percent of the Rockies’ total value comes in at a whopping $672 million.

According to Forbes, the New York Yankees were the most valuable team in baseball at an estimated $8.5 billion.
