Victor Wembanyama Injury Update Announced by Spurs Coach vs Blazers

Going into the Wednesday night matchup against the Portland Trail Blazers on April 8, the San Antonio Spurs had some major question marks due to their injury report.

The biggest concern for the Spurs was the availability of Victor Wembanyama.

As the Spurs battled against the Philadelphia 76ers at the start of the week, Wembanyama’s night ended after a little over 15 minutes.

The star center was ruled out due to a rib injury. After undergoing thorough testing on Tuesday, the Spurs were relieved to find out that Wembanyama wasn’t dealing with anything major.

However, the Spurs couldn’t clear Wembanyama to take the court right away.

Against the Blazers, the big man was ruled out. Before the game, the head coach, Mitch Johnson, addressed the state of Wembanyama.

What Did Mitch Johnson Have To Say About Victor Wembanyama?

“He’s improved quite a bit,” Johnson told reporters. “I don’t think it’s a long-term concern, but we’ll obviously be very cautious with the situation and circumstances we’re under. … We’ll just kind of take it day by day and see how it goes.”

via Jared Weiss, The Athletic: Mitch Johnson says Wemby is improving and there are no major concerns about his rib contusion, but wouldn’t say if Victor will play Friday.

The Spurs started backup center Luke Kornet in Wembanyama’s place on Wednesday night. When they get done with the Blazers, the Spurs will begin thinking about Wembanyama’s status for the Friday night game on April 10, against the San Antonio Spurs.

Clearly, the Spurs can’t commit to Wembanyama’s availability in that one.

Wembanyama is the head of the snake in San Antonio. He is the difference-maker for a team that hopes to compete for a championship.

As much as Wembanyama wants his personal accolades, the Spurs need to make sure he’s protected for the NBA Playoffs.

This season, Wembanyama has appeared in 63 games for the Spurs. He is making 51.0% of his shots from the field and knocking down 35.0% of his shots from three. The veteran is producing 24.8 points per game.

Along with his scoring, Wembanyama is averaging a double-double by coming down with 11.5 rebounds per game. He is also averaging 3.1 assists, 1.0 steals, and 3.1 blocks per game.

If Wembanyama doesn’t get the nod to play on Friday, he’ll have one more shot to take the court before the playoffs on Sunday, April 12, against the Denver Nuggets.
