San Antonio Spurs Advised to Make Difficult Victor Wembanyama Decision

After some additional testing on his rib, San Antonio Spurs center Victor Wembanyama received positive news on the injury front.

The official diagnosis is a rib contusion. The MRI came back clean, and Wembanyama avoided a serious setback, according to Chris Haynes. The Spurs will consider Wembanyama day-to-day moving forward.

Following a blowout shorthanded win against the Philadelphia 76ers, the Spurs are set to face the Portland Trail Blazers on Wednesday, April 8.

Wembanyama popped up on the injury report with his initial status set as doubtful. The chances of him returning right away are slim.

While it seems that Wembanyama has a strong chance of returning to the court before the NBA Playoffs arrive, the former NBA veteran, Lou Williams, strongly advises the Spurs to give the star center the rest of the week off, despite the 65-game circumstances.

“If I’m San Antonio, I’m not putting him back on the floor until he’s absolutely healthy, especially with us right against the playoffs,” Williams said on FanDuel TV’s Run It Back.

“We’re a week out from playoff basketball. Three games left. You don’t want him going out there trying to get that last game and potentially get him to put himself in harm’s way of not being able to compete for a championship. That’s kind of where we are this year with that 65-game rule, and guys having to be eligible to compete to be able to have postseason awards. You hate to see it.”

Wembanyama completed his 63rd game of the season against the Sixers on Monday, but 16 minutes wasn’t enough for Wembanyama to fully qualify the matchup. He needs at least one game with 20 minutes to meet the mark in order to truly compete for MVP, Defensive Player of the Year, and All-NBA.

The NBA world knows how much Victor Wembanyama wants to win individual awards, so if he’s cleared, he’s expected to play.

“If I’m the Spurs, I’m not playing him again until it’s playoff basketball time,” Williams said.

The Spurs missed the playoffs for the first two years of Wembanyama’s run.

This season will be much different. The Spurs have cracked a top-two seed. They are guaranteed a first-round series against an NBA Play-In winner.

In a perfect world for San Antonio, they could roll out Wembanyama for the proper minutes to allow him to get his awards without the risk of a setback for the playoffs. However, the risk is high. Soon, we’ll see if the Spurs take the gamble.
