Blue Jays Trade Prediction Lands Cardinals’ Southpaw Reliever for Two Prospects

The Toronto Blue Jays might soon be thinking about heading to the external market to acquire another pitcher.

With a beat-up starting rotation to start the season and a shaky bullpen, Toronto could use some stability.

Is trading for Cardinals‘ tenured reliever JoJo Romero a good idea for the Jays?

Blue Jays Trade Idea Addresses Bullpen

In this hypothetical MLB trade, the Toronto Blue Jays would acquire Cardinals’ reliever JoJo Romero in exchange for two prospects, RJ Schreck and Yohendrick Pinango.

St. Louis made a number of trades this offseason, but surprisingly, Romero stayed put. Given his contract status, Romero will likely be a hot commodity in the coming months if the Cardinals aren’t competitive.

Romero, 29, is eligible for free agency after this season. Considering his workload in the last couple of seasons, he could garner a solid haul back to the Cardinals. Last season in 61 innings and 65 appearances, he posted a 2.07 ERA. The Cardinals are using Romero early and often this season, which might be a showcase to the rest of MLB. He already has four appearances in the first week and has yet to surrender a run.

He came up with the Philadelphia Phillies in 2020 and has spent the last five seasons in St. Louis.

In 176 appearances with the Cards, JoJo Romero has an ERA of 2.93 with 167 strikeouts. A quality southpaw reliever that could benefit just about any bullpen.

Who Would Say No to This Trade?

It’s hard to say here who would say no to this potential trade idea. It feels very even on both sides, with the Blue Jays addressing a bullpen that could use a tenured arm, and St. Louis acquiring two top-10 prospects who have extended minor league experience.

RJ Schreck and Yohendrick Pinango might be prospects who could benefit from being in another organization to see real big-league time. They are both in Triple-A, and the Blue Jays have a strong position group core, so those two outfield prospects might not have a real runway to the majors.

It’s at least worth considering for Toronto to make an offer to the Cardinals. JoJo Romero carried a lot of trade speculation in the offseason due to Chaim Bloom’s clearing of house, and the Blue Jays immediately popped up as a potential landing spot.
