Tampa Captain Taking Personal Leave of Absence

Tampa Bay Lightning captain Victor Hedman is taking a temporary leave of absence for “personal reasons,” the team said on Wednesday, March 25, according to WFLA. Further details about what’s going on with the defenseman aren’t clear.

Hedman last played on March 19 against the Vancouver Canucks, leaving the game early due to illness. His season has been a mixed bag after he underwent elbow surgery in December 2025. He was out for an extended period of time, returning to play in the 2026 Navy Federal Credit Union NHL Stadium Series against the Boston Bruins at Raymond James Stadium on Feb. 1

Hedman has played in 33 games this season, with one goal and 16 assists. The Lightning are currently trailing the Buffalo Sabres in the Eastern Conference. The team appears to be playoff bound—with or without Hedman.

Fans Reacted to the News About Hedman on Social Media

Many Lightning fans are hoping that Hedman overcomes whatever he’s dealing with and that he’s able to return to the team sometime soon.

The comments section of WFLA’s post about Hedman’s leave quickly filled up with comments from fans wondering what’s ailing the 35-year-old.

“Something is definitely going on with him either personally in his life or his health, you can see it in his game play,” one person wrote.

“I hope he and his family is ok,” someone else said.

“Sending love and prayers Heddy! Hoping everything is ok,” a third comment read.

Victor Hedman Has Been an Instrumental Part of the Lightning’s Lineup for 17 Years

Hedman has long been the backbone of the Lightning, anchoring the blue line with a rare combination of size, skill, and composure. Known for his ability to control the pace of play, whether he’s breaking up opposing rushes or starting them with a crisp outlet pass, Hedman has been a top defensemen across the league.

A former Norris Trophy winner, Hedman first joined the team in 2009. Over the years, his leadership has been especially vital during Tampa Bay’s recent success, including back-to-back Stanley Cup championships. He even earned the Conn Smythe Trophy in 2020.

Even as the roster evolves, Hedman has always been a steady presence, contributing offensively while maintaining strong defensive awareness. His experience, poise under pressure, and ability to step up in key moments continue to make him indispensable to the Lightning’s playoff ambitions.

Additionally, Hedman has been known to give back to the Tampa community, from charitable donations to his support of the Humane Society of Tampa Bay—and other philanthropic initiatives.
It’s clear that #77 is a fan favorite, too, making his absence all the more noticeable whenever he’s not on the ice, as both his leadership and presence are difficult to replace.
