Steelers Get Update on Plans to Sign Veteran Safety Darnell Savage

The Pittsburgh Steelers have been one of the most intriguing teams to watch across the NFL early on this offseason. Despite not having a concrete answer at the quarterback position, the Steelers have continued to work on upgrading their roster as they wait for an answer on Aaron Rodgers regarding his future in the league.

One guy it seemed like Pittsburgh was set to sign is veteran safety Darnell Savage, but a couple of weeks after the initial reports of his signing emerged, there is still no official confirmation that he has put pen to paper on a deal. With fans wondering where things stand, a Steelers insider recently provided an update on the situation.

Steelers Insider Provides Update on Darnell Savage Free Agency Pursuit

A first-round pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, Savage spent the first five years of his career with the Green Bay Packers as a starting safety. While he held his own at the backend of their defense, he never managed to reach his full potential, which prompted the team to move on from him. After spending the 2024 campaign with the Jacksonville Jaguars, Savage split his time with the Jags, Buffalo Bills, and Washington Commanders in 2025.

Early on in free agency, the Steelers worked on addressing their secondary by signing Savage, cornerback Jamel Dean, and safety Jaquan Brisker. While the signings of Dean and Brisker have been made official, though, Savage still is stuck in limbo, leading fans to wonder whether or not he will actually be joining the team.

Reports seem to indicate that Savage still intends to play for Pittsburgh in 2026, as he’s already preparing for the new season. According to team insider Mark Kaboly of The Pat McAfee Show, the Steelers are still looking at Savage’s medicals, and while the process is taking some time, the expectation is that he still will eventually end up landing with the team.

“I think they were still checking on medicals with him, last I heard,” Kaboly said on “The Fan Morning Show.” “I’m not 100% sure. I don’t think they anticipate anything happening, I think it’s just a matter of going through a process.”

Should Steelers Fans Be Concerned About Darnell Savage Situation?

Given what happened with Maxx Crosby and the Baltimore Ravens, any mention of medicals is going to make fans concerned. Granted, Savage isn’t the flashiest signing in the world, but he figures to play a role in the Steelers’ new-look secondary should he actually end up landing with the team.

As of right now, it seems like there is no reason to panic, even though things are taking longer than expected. Savage does have a history of injuries, so Pittsburgh is likely just being thorough before signing off on the deal. This situation will be worth keeping tabs on until it is finalized, but for the time being, it looks like Savage will still find his way to the Steelers, even if it takes a little more time.
