Sam Burns Gets Candid About New Sponsorship, Houston Open & More

Ahead of the Texas Children’s Houston Open, 5-time PGA Tour winner Sam Burns hosted a surprise meet and greet at a Houston Raising Canes, where he discussed his new sponsorship, his mindset heading into this week, Masters thoughts, and how he feels about being back in Houston.

The Louisiana native sat down in front of media and fans to answer a few questions before indulging in a classic box combo with an Arnold Palmer.

Simple Motivation That Goes a Long Way

One of the more lighthearted moments came when Burns was asked if Raising Canes is a frequent stop while traveling on the Tour.

“I mean, I never shy away from it,” he said. ” If I’m craving it, I’ll get it or if there’s one close and I want it, I’m gonna go get it. …I ate it a lot in college. I don’t remember the first time [I had it], but it was definitely something we had, you know, in school.”

Burns’ go-to combo meal?

“Box combo, no slaw, extra toast, typically,” he said.

The sponsorship came about earlier this year and caught the eye of a few sports writers; One being Greg Wille of Temple Belton Sports, who tweeted, “PGA Tour golfer Sam Burns is sporting a Raising Cane’s logo on his collar. ‘I’ll have the Tee Box Combo, please. Double fries, hopefully no double bogeys.’”

During the meet and greet, Burns did not shy away from expressing his gratitude for the new partnership.

“Being from Louisiana, it’s kind of in our DNA,” he said. “I know Todd [Graves] very well – [I have] a great friendship with him. It was something I started chatting to him about a year or so ago, and he said, ‘Well if you’re serious, let’s get it done.’ So, it’s pretty natural that happened. It’s kind of a perfect fit for me and for them – Raising Canes. I’m very appreciative and very honored to wear this logo and be a part of the team.”

A Warm Return to Houston

Over the years, Burns has had a plethora of results at Memorial Park. In 2020, he missed the cut (+5), tied for 7th in 2021 and ’22, and withdrew after the first round – carding +7 – in 2023. After not playing in 2024-25, Burns is optimistic to be back in the Lone Star state.

“I’m really excited,” Burns said. “I love coming here to Houston. It’s always a great turnout, you know, the fans … I look forward to this event. I haven’t played the last couple of years, but I’m excited to be back and looking forward to picking up this week. …It’s a really strong field this year, great golf course, [and] it looks like we have some pretty nice weather.”

According to CBS Sports, Burns is one of the favorited contenders in the 135-player field, with odds of +2200, as of Tuesday.

“We play a pretty long schedule throughout the year, so really just trying to come in each and every week and being prepared, ready to play [is important],” he said. “…Ultimately, when I’m here this week, I’m present [and] focusing on this tournament. Obviously in a few weeks, there’s a pretty big tournament coming up in Augusta, Georgia. But when I’m here, I’m focused on trying to compete and play my best. Once this week is over, then we’ll kind of turn attention to the Masters.”

What’s Working for Burns on the Course?

While Burns’ Houston comments highlighted his off-course cravings, an interview from the Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by Mastercard offers a revealing look at what fuels him during a round.

Asked about his go-to snack at the turn, Burns kept it simple:

“I would say, like, a peanut butter and honey sandwich, or peanut butter and banana.”

It’s a no-frills, efficient choice – quick energy, easy to eat, and consistent.
