Cubs Showing Interest in Last-Second Moves Before Opening Day

The Chicago Cubs are gearing up to begin their 2026 MLB season on Thursday at Wrigley Field against the Washington Nationals.

Fans cannot wait to have meaningful baseball back on TV. For the Cubs, the start of the season is another chance at making a World Series run. Chicago seems to have a much-improved roster from where it was this time last season.

With that being said, Jed Hoyer and the Cubs’ front office remains active.

According to a report from Patrick Mooney of The Athletic, Chicago is scouring the market as players are being placed on waivers or holding opt-out clauses.

“Given the sheer number of players being placed on waivers or holding opt-out clauses in their contracts, the Cubs are monitoring the market for possible upgrades,” Mooney wrote. “One internal debate is whether the club needs to acquire an extra infielder. The bullpen also remains a constant area of focus.”

Jed Hoyer Gets Honest About the Cubs Shopping Around

After putting together the most active offseason in years, the Cubs remaining aggressive is exactly what fans want to see. Hoyer spoke out about looking around for potential upgrades.

“There’s just a lot of movement around the league,” Hoyer said. “We’re trying to figure that out. We still have some balls in the air.”

Granted, that doesn’t mean that Chicago will actually make a move. Or, the Cubs could opt to make multiple moves. If the right situation comes around, it sounds like the front office is ready to pull the trigger.

No fan can ask for more than that.

Chicago Is Feeling Like a Contender Entering the Season

During the MLB offseason, Chicago made quite a few moves. Most notably, the Cubs were able to acquire starting pitcher Edward Cabrera in a deal with the Miami Marlins. They were also able to sign star third baseman Alex Bregman.

On paper, the team should be better this season than it was last.

Both the lineup and starting rotation are going to major strengths. The bullpen, on the other hand, will need to prove that it can perform at the level Chicago needs it to.

There are a lot of reasons for Cubs fans to be excited about the 2026 season. Hopefully, the team is able to live up to the hype and expectations of being a legitimate World Series contender.
