NASCAR Driver Calls Out Gap to Veteran Teams After Darlington Raceway Run:”We’re Only in Year Two”

Parker Retzlaff didn’t hold back when describing the challenge his team faces in the NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series.

After an eighth-place finish at Darlington Raceway, Retzlaff pointed to the gap between his group and the sport’s long-established organizations. The result included stage points in both stages during the Sport Clips VFW 200, giving the team a boost in the early playoff picture.

Even with the strong finish, Retzlaff made it clear the team is still building its foundation. Competing against organizations with decades of experience, the learning curve remains steep.

Still, the performance at Darlington Raceway showed measurable progress. The team executed across long green-flag runs and stayed in position late in the race. For a newer NASCAR team, those details matter as the season continues to take shape.

Parker Retzlaff Compares NASCAR Team to Established Organizations

“We’re racing against teams that have been put together for 50 years, and we’re only in year two, trying to build a whole new team of people who haven’t worked together and get all the resources where they need to be. I think we’re doing a very good job, and it starts with the leadership.”

That comparison reflects a common reality in the NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series. Veteran teams rely on years of data, established personnel, and proven systems. Newer teams are still developing those same pieces while competing each week.

For Retzlaff, acknowledging that gap is part of the process.

Darlington Raceway Performance Highlights NASCAR Team Growth

At Darlington Raceway, the team showed clear strength over longer runs. As tires wore and track conditions changed, the car remained competitive against more established teams.

“I think we were really good in the long run, but we just struggle a little bit to fire off. That makes it tough to compete with those guys early in a run before it comes back to us.”

That balance between long-run speed and short-run performance often defines results at Darlington Raceway. Teams that can fire off quickly while maintaining pace over time typically control the race.

Despite that challenge, the team stayed inside the top 10 and avoided major mistakes, which is critical at a track known for punishing even small errors.

NASCAR Playoff Battle Depends on Consistency and Stage Points

Late in the race, a restart with 15 laps to go created one of the most intense moments of the day.

“It was very aggressive. With 15 to go, everyone is pushing for everything they’ve got. That’s actually where we struggled with firing off, so I wasn’t sure how it was going to go.

“It worked out better than I expected. At that point, you just push as hard as you can, try to get clean air, and make lap time.”

Even with that challenge, the driver capitalized on the opportunity to secure a strong finish and valuable stage points.

“To get stage points in both stages at a place like this with a lower-budget team that’s in year two and still building, it’s a very good day. This place is very hard. It’s hard to get everything correct, and I think we did a lot right.

“I still think there’s a lot we can work on, and I know we can do better. But an eighth-place finish and stage points in both stages, those are the days you’ve got to have if you’re going to try and make a playoff run.”

Retzlaff also credited partners Blanchard Cat, Reynolds, South Carolina Outcast, and Funkaway for their support.

With Martinsville Speedway up next, the team will look to build on its progress as the NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series season continues.
