Chicago Cubs Make Big Opening Day Roster Decision

The Chicago Cubs will certainly be a team to watch very closely during the 2026 season. The Cubs took a nice step in the right direction this past season, as they finished with a 92-70 record and made the playoffs for the first time since 2021. With this, the Cubs will now be looking to take another step forward during the 2026 season.

The Cubs had a busy offseason this year as well. Chicago most notably signed star infielder Alex Bregman to a five-year contract in free agency. They also swung a big trade with the Miami Marlins to bring in pitcher Edward Cabrera. The Cubs’ other additions from this offseason include Hunter Harvey, Phil Maton, Shelby Miller, Hoby Milner, Jacob Webb, and Tyler Austin. With this, the Cubs are entering this season with several new players.

However, the Cubs have now made a big Opening Day roster decision with another one of their offseason additions.

Cubs Are Adding Veteran Outfielder Michael Conforto to Opening Day Roster

With the start of the regular season almost here for the Cubs, a notable update regarding their Opening Day roster has been announced. According to The Athletic’s Patrick Mooney, the Cubs are adding veteran outfielder Michael Conforto to their Opening Day roster.

“The Cubs are planning to add Michael Conforto to their Opening Day roster,” Mooney posted on X.

The Cubs signed Conforto to a minor-league contract back in late February. The 33-year-old was aiming to impress in hopes of landing a spot on the Cubs’ major league roster, and now he has successfully done that with this news.

Conforto will now be looking to bounce back from what was a tough 2025 season for the veteran outfielder. In 138 games with the Los Angeles Dodgers this past season, Conforto had 12 home runs, 36 RBIs, and a .199 batting average. With numbers like these, it was a season to forget for the 10-year veteran, and he will now be aiming to turn things back around as a member of the Cubs.

With Seiya Suzuki and Tyler Austin currently dealing with injuries, it is understandable that the Cubs are giving Conforto a chance. He will now provide them with more depth at the outfield position and with another player who has a good amount of major league experience.

Cubs’ Conforto Could Benefit From This Fresh Start

When looking at Conforto’s resume, the possibility of him bouncing back a bit this season should not be ruled out. Just back during the 2024 season with the San Francisco Giants, he had 20 home runs, 66 RBIs, and a .237 batting average. The former All-Star has also hit at least 27 home runs three times during his career. That includes when he had a career-high 33 home runs during his 2019 All-Star campaign with the New York Mets.

While expecting Conforto to get back to his prime power numbers may be a stretch, the possibility of him providing the Cubs with some solid pop could be there. It will be interesting to see what kind of season he can put together for Chicago from here.
