As NASCAR Darlington Raceway Throwback Weekend approaches, Carson Hocevar finds himself at the center of a familiar conversation.
The 21-year-old driver has drawn comparisons to Dale Earnhardt in recent weeks, largely because of his aggressive style on track. It is a label that carries weight in NASCAR. It is also one Hocevar is not fully embracing.
“I think I’ve hit enough people already,” Hocevar said during a media session at Darlington, addressing the comparisons head-on.
Hocevar Addresses the Earnhardt Comparisons Directly
The comparison to Earnhardt, known as “The Intimidator,” is not one that gets thrown around lightly. Earnhardt built his reputation on fearless, physical racing that often blurred the line between calculated aggression and controversy.
Hocevar understands where the narrative started. He also made it clear that it has taken on a life of its own.
“I’m just driving how I want to drive,” he said. “I don’t really love the comparisons and what they turned into.”
Hocevar explained that what began as a reflection on his aggressive racing style quickly shifted into something bigger.
“It started by not just apologizing after running into people and being really aggressive,” he said. “Then it turned into I’m as good as him. I don’t know where that came from.”
A Throwback Scheme That Adds to the Conversation
The timing of those comparisons is hard to ignore.
Hocevar will drive a Dale Earnhardt-inspired throwback paint scheme this weekend at Darlington, bringing added attention to both his performance and his approach behind the wheel.
The No. 77 Spire Motorsports Chevrolet will feature a design modeled after one of Earnhardt’s early Wrangler-era looks, a nod to one of the most recognizable visual identities in the sport’s history.
On a weekend built around honoring the sport’s past, Hocevar will be doing more than just running a tribute scheme. He will be racing in it. That alone invites comparisons, fair or not.
Hocevar Focused on Speed, Not Reputation
For Hocevar, the priority remains simple.
“I’m just hoping I’m fast enough, that we’re good enough that we can be up front,” he said. “Be relevant.”
It’s a grounded answer from a driver still establishing himself at the Cup level while drawing more attention for his racing style.
He made it clear that he has no interest in shaping his identity around anyone else.
“I like just being me,” Hocevar said. “It’s a lot easier that way for my sake. I don’t like to have to be anybody I’m not.”
Darlington Will Put Everything Into Focus
Darlington Raceway has a way of amplifying storylines.
The track’s reputation, combined with the nostalgia of throwback weekend, creates a setting where history and the present collide. For Hocevar, that means the conversation around Earnhardt is unlikely to quiet down anytime soon.
