The latest round of Toronto Maple Leafs rumors has turned to an interesting take on captain Auston Matthews.
Now, rumors about a potential trade involving Matthews are nothing new at this point. There has been plenty of chatter positing that the Leafs could be entertaining trade offers this summer.
But there’s one team that seems to make the most sense: The Minnesota Wild. This isn’t speculation by a bunch of guys spitballing over beers. The source is a respectable journalist, Michael Russo.
Russo is as solid as they come. That’s why hearing about Wild GM Bill Guerin keeping some dry powder around to entice the Leafs to trade Matthews this summer is certainly stunning. If that’s the case, these Maple Leafs rumors could have some legs to them.
Guerin certainly has the guts to pull it off. He traded for Quinn Hughes this season. He was reportedly in on Vincent Trocheck at the deadline but backed off.
Could the reason he backed off be that he’s got an eye on Matthews?
Given the way the Leafs’ season has gone, there’s plenty of reason to believe that could be the case. There’s no reason to believe that the Wild wouldn’t be interested in the Matthews, given the connection between the Leafs’ captain and the Wild.
Exploring the Matthews-Wild Connection
So, there’s a definite connection between Matthews and the Wild. That’s why these Maple Leafs rumors could make sense.
Guerin raved about Matthews at the Olympics this year. Guerin, who was also Team USA’s GM, had nothing but positive press for Matthews. In fact, everyone on Team USA was overly defensive of Matthews as captain, praising his skill and leadership.
Plus, there’s also a connection to Quinn Hughes. Hughes and Matthews were teammates and seemed to have gotten along well. That’s another thing that could bode well for the Wild’s efforts to land the superstar center.
There’s one other particular issue to consider. Matthews played on a line with Matt Boldy and Jake Guentzel. Boldy, in particular, looked pretty good alongside Matthews.
So, could that be another point to fuel these Maple Leafs rumors?
It’s a tantalizing thought from the Wild’s perspective. The more one digs into this situation, the more apparent it becomes.

Maple Leafs Rumors Should Go into Overdrive Once Season Ends
There seems to be a tense calm surrounding the Toronto Maple Leafs right now. The stance is that everyone appears to be waiting for the clock to run out. Once the final buzzer sounds on Game 82, the real speculation will begin.
As such, there’s plenty of reason to believe that chatter around Matthews should pick up once the Leafs’ offseason begins.
With that, Maple Leafs rumors involving a trade will become increasingly apparent. Unless Matthews vows to stay in Toronto, it wouldn’t be surprising to hear the Wild make a strong pitch for the former Hart Trophy winner.
If the Maple Leafs are serious about rebuilding, moving on from Matthews could make plenty of sense. If Minnesota’s offer is truly enticing, and the Maple Leafs recover their first-round pick in the 2026 NHL Draft, a trade could suddenly become feasible.
