Roman Reigns Gets Called Out For Breaking Unwritten WWE Rule

WWE legend Tommy Dreamer joined others in a rant against Roman Reigns for breaking an “unwritten rule” in pro wrestling during his recent promo battle against CM Punk. WrestleMania 42 will see Reigns and Punk having a dream match for the elusive Night 2 main event spot over the WWE World Heavyweight Championship. Reigns calling Punk “old” upset Dreamer and a few other veterans with podcasts or radio shows.

Dreamer said the following on Busted Open Radio about the Monday Night Raw moment:

“Promo class 101, when you’re insulting your opponent, the biggest thing you’re never supposed to do, you’re never supposed to call your opponent fat and out of shape, or old. You know why? Because when you get punched in your face and you get dropped, the ‘old’ guy just dropped you.

If you’re saying somebody is old, and you’re in the main event of WrestleMania, you’re going toe-to-toe and you can’t beat an old guy. No one would say that to The Undertaker. No one would say that to Shawn Michaels; Cody’s not going to say that to Randy. No one’s going to say that to Brock.”

Reigns is under criticism for referencing Punk’s older age and taking away from the world champion’s current credibility. Dreamer was backed up by Bubba Ray Dudley and a few other personalities over the past day of discourse.

Why Is This An Unwritten Rule?

Dreamer revealed that he grew up in the business learning what Roman did was one of the biggest rules to never break. Today’s wrestlers are more used to a “wild, wild west” scenario of saying personal things to each other to build conflict without abiding by any reals.

Old school logic dictated that a wrestler never mocked their opponents over things like age and weight. Dreamer cited that the logic behind this is that fans will see you as getting defeated by or struggling against an old or out of shape wrestler if you are the one to make them believe that.

The logic in play here would claim that Reigns is taking away from his own upcoming performance since he’s just facing “an old guy” at WrestleMania. This comment looks worse since CM Punk is having a dominant world title reign and one of the top stars in WWE.

Did Roman Reigns Hurt WrestleMania Match?

Despite Dreamer backing up his point and many other wrestlers saying this throughout the years, Reigns and Punk still had an effective promo segment. Both main eventers sold the tension of feeling real hostility over past personal insults exchanged.

WrestleMania 42 has been criticized for having a weak build compared to the past few years. Triple H must deliver two outstanding nights of action to silence the critics. WWE struggling to stay hot and AEW doing much better lately puts pressure on Triple H.

There is a solid chance that Triple H endorsed Reigns’ comment or even booked it to create more drama. Punk vs Reigns must feel like the biggest match of the year to make up for the rest of the WrestleMania card feeling lackluster.
