The New York Yankees entered spring training with a crowded outfield and a simple expectation for Jasson Domínguez: continue developing in the minors if necessary. Yet as Opening Day approaches, the once-polarizing prospect is forcing the organization to rethink that assumption.
For months, trade speculation surrounded Domínguez. Some fans and analysts floated his name as a potential trade chip to address other roster needs. Instead of letting the noise affect him, the 23-year-old has responded the only way a young player can—by producing.
And through the first few weeks of Grapefruit League action, Domínguez has been one of the most productive hitters in Yankees camp.
In 11 games this spring, the switch-hitting outfielder owns a .333 batting average with three home runs, nine RBIs, and a 1.010 OPS across 35 plate appearances. His performance hasn’t been built on empty contact either. Domínguez has already collected 11 hits and eight runs scored while showing the power that once made him one of the most hyped international prospects the Yankees had signed in years.
The numbers alone are making it difficult for the Yankees to ignore him.
Domínguez Is Forcing the Yankees’ Hand
Spring training competitions are rarely decided purely by statistics, but Domínguez’s production is hard to dismiss. His nine RBIs lead the Yankees this spring, and his .667 slugging percentage ranks among the best in camp.
More importantly, he has delivered in big moments against experienced pitchers.
Domínguez had a memorable matchup with Justin Verlander, a future Hall of Famer. Domínguez famously homered against Verlander during his major-league debut in 2023, and he repeated the feat this spring with a towering blast, reminding everyone why scouts once labeled him “The Martian.”
Those flashes of star-level ability remain part of his profile. But what has impressed the Yankees even more this spring is his maturity.
Manager Aaron Boone has repeatedly praised Domínguez’s approach, noting that the young outfielder has handled the uncertainty around his roster status with professionalism and consistency.
That composure matters in a Yankees clubhouse filled with veterans.
Roster Competition Still Creates Uncertainty
Despite his strong spring, Domínguez’s path to the Opening Day roster remains complicated.
The Yankees’ outfield picture already includes Aaron Judge, Cody Bellinger, and Trent Grisham as established options. The team also added veteran depth with Randal Grichuk on a minor-league deal, a move that initially appeared to push Domínguez further down the depth chart.
Still, the Yankees have shown in recent years that they are willing to carry young talent if performance demands it. Domínguez’s blend of speed, switch-hitting power, and athleticism offers something unique compared to some of the more veteran-leaning options on the roster.
His two stolen bases this spring also hint at another layer of his game that could make him valuable off the bench if the Yankees decide to keep him.
Domínguez understands that the final decision isn’t his to make.
But the numbers suggest he’s doing everything possible to make the Yankees’ decision uncomfortable.
If Domínguez’s spring performance continues, the Yankees may consider bringing him north for Opening Day instead of trading him.
