Taylor Swift, who, of course, is Travis Kelce‘s future wife, has nothing to prove at this point, and her 12th studio album, 2025’s “The Life of a Showgirl,” continues to top the Billboard charts. But, not everybody is a fan of Swift’s writing style, and one rock star is speaking out with his thoughts on how she writes music.
Swift and Kelce’s wedding date remains under wraps as the tight end considers whether to return to the NFL and the Kansas City Chiefs for a 14th season. One of the central themes of Swift’s music is that she writes about her own personal experiences. Of course, part of the appeal of the music is also her melodies, which are memorable and catchy.
“I wanted melodies that were so infectious that you were almost angry at it and lyrics that are just as vivid, but crisp and focused and completely intentional,” she said in her August 2025 appearance on Kelce’s “New Heights” podcast.
“I wanted to do it at the highest intensity and rapid fire,” she added of being on her Eras tour, because Swift is also a performer. “When I heard reports of people saying that they got actual amnesia after the concerts, I was like, ‘I think we did it. We nailed it.’”
So, catchy, memorable melodies paired with confessional songwriter is the Swift recipe for success. But, not everybody likes it, and one rock star is making that known.
Rock Star Disses Taylor Swift’s Writing Style and Calls It ‘Boring’
Swift is coming up on career news, in that she’s set to release the second single off “The Life of a Showgirl,” on Tuesday, March 10. That track is “Elizabeth Taylor,” and the single officially hits radio on March 10.
It’s worth noting that Swift has yet to release her song about Kelce, titled “Wood,” as a radio single. “I get you in a room and it’s like I’ve known you forever,” Swift said on “New Heights” about meeting Kelce. “It was the easiest conversation I ever had, and it was just so much fun that it knocked my socks off.”
When Swift’s new single hits, there’s at least one musician who won’t be listening. That musician is Detroit rocker Jack White. In an interview with The Guardian about his new book, “Jack White: Collected Lyrics & Selected Writing Volume 1,” White talked about musicians such as Taylor Swift, who he mentioned write about their love life and high-profile situations, but he said that it wasn’t his style.
Musician Says Writing Music the Way Taylor Swift Does is ‘Boring’
When asked if any of his songs are fully autobiographical, he said, “Not too much.” Then, he mentioned that he fins that kind of writing style “a little bit boring.”
He added, “Now it’s become very popular in the Taylor Swift way of pop singers writing about all of their publicly aired break-ups, which I don’t find interesting at all. I think it’s a little bit boring for me to write about myself.”
He added that writing about something personal as a famous musician just amplifies it. “If it’s something really painful, I’m not going to put this important, painful thing that I went through out there for some idiot on the internet to stomp all over.”
White added, “So, I put a percentage of that into what I do and then morph it into somebody else’s character. I can’t really learn about myself until I put it into somebody else’s shoes.”
Of course, White is a legend in a music world, and he likely means no harm with his comments. He just has a different writing style than Swift, and besides, there can only be one Taylor Swift.
