Patrick and Brittany Mahomes’ Kansas City Current will take center stage in ESPN’s new documentary series, “NWSL: The Final Third.” The three-episode series premieres February 25 and follows three National Women’s Soccer League teams as the 2025 regular season concludes.
In addition to the Current, the series embeds with Angel City FC and the Washington Spirit. Director Marie Margolius described the timing of the project as pivotal.
“The three teams we embedded with were navigating very different realities as the 2025 regular season concluded,” Margolius said. “The drama that unfolded was incredible to witness.”
Patrick & Brittany Mahomes’ Kansas City Current Spotlighted in ESPN Series
The Kansas City Current, co-owned by Patrick Mahomes and Brittany Mahomes, has become one of the most recognized teams in the NWSL. According to Forbes’ rankings of the most valuable women’s sports teams, the franchise is valued at $275 million and ranks seventh globally.
Founded in 2020, the Current reached the NWSL Championship final in 2022, falling to Portland Thorns FC. Since then, the organization has continued to grow on and off the field.
The Mahomes family’s involvement has played a visible role in the franchise’s rise. Brittany, a former collegiate player at the University of Texas at Tyler who also played professionally in Iceland, has remained active in promoting the club. Patrick has supported infrastructure investments and player development as the team builds its fan base in Kansas City.
The new ESPN series arrives as the Current prepares for the 2026 season with an expanded uniform lineup.
Kansas City Current Unveil ‘Storm Kit’ for 2026 Season
The Current introduced a third uniform for 2026 called the “Storm Kit.” The design features a deep navy blue, described by the club as “storm,” with bright teal streaks resembling electricity across clouds.
The jersey includes the words “Mighty Current” on the bottom right-hand side. The storm color also appears in the piping of the collar, sleeves and hem of the club’s teal secondary kit, which debuted last season.
The teal secondary kit and the red “Heartland” kit will remain in rotation alongside the new design.
“The Storm Kit reflects the momentum of the organization both on and off the pitch, while also showcasing our Kansas City pride and brand synergy,” Current chief marketing officer Jocelyn Monroe said in a news release. “This iconic look is poised to be a fan favorite, and we are proud to expand our kit options.”
Sponsorship partnerships will largely remain unchanged for 2026. The United Way of Greater Kansas City continues as the front-of-kit partner, LaCroix appears on the upper back, and Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas City remains on the sleeve.
ESPN Launches Women’s Sports Sundays Featuring NWSL
The documentary aligns with ESPN’s broader push into women’s sports coverage. Beginning in 2026, ESPN will introduce Women’s Sports Sundays, replacing Sunday Night Baseball, which moves to NBC after 35 years on the network.
The new weekly programming block will feature live NWSL and WNBA games over nine consecutive weeks, totaling 12 games. Financial services firm Ally has signed on as a major sponsor.
“Women’s sports are experiencing continued momentum,” ESPN’s Rosalyn Durant said. “Women’s Sports Sundays is ESPN’s next step in meeting that demand.”
In addition to live broadcasts, ESPN plans to dedicate full production teams and social media coverage to the initiative.
