Who Just Won the Genesis Invitational? 5 Facts About Golf’s Newest Star

When Jacob Bridgeman hoisted the trophy at the 2026 Genesis Invitational, he didn’t just win his first PGA Tour title; he became one of golf’s most exciting stars to watch.

The 26-year-old South Carolina native powered through a stacked field at Riviera Country Club, finishing 18-under par and holding off a late charge from Rory McIlroy (-17) to capture a career-defining victory.

Here are five key things to know about golf’s newest breakout winner.

1. This was Bridgeman’s First PGA Tour Win

Bridgeman earned his first career PGA Tour victory by surviving one of the toughest closing stretches at the Genesis Invitational. He also becoming the tournament’s 100th champion.

He began Sunday with a six-shot lead and even stretched it to seven with 12 holes remaining – only to feel the full pressure of Riviera down the stretch.

“I was paired with Rory and it was kind of a lot, I thought,” Bridgeman said. “Then I got out there and he was super nice to me and super welcoming, and the fans were great as well.

With most of the crowd roaring for McIlroy, Bridgeman went birdie-less over his final 15 holes, fought off late charges, and still calmly rolled in a 3-foot par putt on 18 to secure a one-shot victory.

“I couldn’t even feel my hands on the last couple greens,” Bridgeman said. “I just hit the putt hoping it would get somewhere near the hole, and both of them I left a mile short. But I’m glad it’s done now.”

Bridgeman won as a first-time competitor at Riviera, something not accomplished since 2005. Ranked outside the world’s top 50 entering the week (52), he broke through in a Signature Event, collected $4 million, and was greeted by tournament host Tiger Woods overlooking the 18th green.

“This is way, way better than I’ve ever dreamt it,” Bridgeman said.

2. Bridgeman took over Riviera early, despite odds against him

Bridgeman dominated Riviera all week, firing a consistent string of under-par rounds to build a commanding lead. After shooting 66-64-64 through the first three rounds, he entered the final day with a six-shot lead and looked every bit in command before closing in for the victory. Bridgeman would finish the fourth round with a 72.

According to the PGA Tour, “Bridgeman has hit 76% of his greens at Riviera and is tied for fifth in Proximity to Hole, along with leading in the Strokes Gained category.”

Winning at Riviera does more than put Bridgeman’s name on a trophy. The victory provides exemptions into future majors and high-profile events, including automatic entries into The Masters (which he was already secured for after reaching the Tour Championship last season), PGA Championship, and The Players Championship.

The odds of Bridgeman winning at the beginning of the week were 80/1.

3. Bridgeman’s putting carried him to the end

If there’s one skill that’s defined Bridgeman’s rise, it’s his putting.

He has openly admitted that earlier in his career, he leaned heavily on the flat stick. “I kind of just putted my way around and won some tournaments that way,” he said, and that strength has followed him to the PGA Tour. Since earning his Tour card in 2023, he’s ranked seventh, 21st, and eighth in Strokes Gained: Putting across the past three seasons, including eighth in 2026.

That touch showed up in a big way at the Genesis Invitational, where Bridgeman led the field in putting through three rounds. What made it even more impressive: Riviera’s Poa annua greens have historically been a challenge for him, known for their late-day bumpiness and unpredictability.

In the past, Bridgeman said those conditions frustrated him. This week, he embraced them.

“I’ve accepted now that some of them are going to bump out,” Bridgeman explained. “I think in the past I would get kind of frustrated with that and that would kind of inch over into my stroke and play.”

4. He’s a Clemson standout

Bridgeman’s golf journey took shape in college at Clemson University before he turned professional in 2022. At Clemson, he was one of the Tigers’ most decorated golfers, tying the school record for wins and earning accolades like ACC Golfer of the Year.

His strong amateur resume also includes multiple international team appearances and victories in junior events, reflecting a measured rise through the ranks rather than a sudden breakthrough.

“I was not that good at approach in the past, especially when I was in college,” he said. “We’ve done a lot to kind of increase the height of my iron shots and give me a little bit more spin. I switched balls at the start of the year and the new ball’s been great. But this week I think the soft greens are allowing me to kind of just hit cruisy shots, little chip shots a lot of times especially in the wind and it gives me a lot of control.”

5. Bridgeman recently married his longtime girlfriend, Haley

Off the course, Bridgeman has had another major milestone to celebrate. In December, he married longtime partner Haley Farmer in a ceremony surrounded by family and close friends. Farmer has been a steady presence throughout Bridgeman’s rise, often by his side at tournaments and supporting him through the ups and downs of professional golf.

While Bridgeman’s first Tour win is obviously his biggest shared success yet, it comes during a special chapter of his life off the course as well. Balancing life as a newlywed with the demands of the PGA Tour isn’t easy, but Bridgeman’s breakthrough week at Riviera provided a storybook moment – the kind of victory a couple will look back on for years to come.

“I am so grateful for such an amazing year. I accomplished things in golf that I’ve dreamed about since I was a little kid,” Bridgeman said in a social media post on January 5, reflecting on 2025. “I competed with my heroes. Developed and grew friendships. Was shown how incredible my support system around me is. And I had the best day of my life when I married my favourite person in the world.”
