Of course that 1980 team of scrappy, amateur underdogs had a natural arch-rival — the Soviet Union, an Olympic hockey dynasty that coming into 1980 had won four Olympic gold medals in a row and five of the last six gold medals. The dramatic and highly improbable Team USA victory over the Soviets in the Olympic semifinals was named by Sports Illustrated as the No. 1 sports moment of the entire 20th century.

But the Soviet Union fell apart, and the country has not existed since 1991. The restored country of Russia has been banned from the Olympics since 2020 due to findings that it ran a longstanding doping program for its athletes.

A second ban was imposed in 2022 when Russia was found in violation of the Olympic Truce, which prohibits countries from starting military operations from a week before the Olympics to a week after the end of the Paralympics.

These days, Team USA’s toughest rival is Team Canada. The Canadians are the betting favorites to win gold, with +115 odds. But Team USA is a close second favorite at +175, according to DraftKings Sportsbook.

Team USA’s Next Games

The Olympic men’s hockey tournament got underway Feb. 11. So when does Team USA play its next games?

With the field divided into three groups of four teams each for the preliminary round, the USA men play in Group C, along with Latvia, Germany and Denmark.

Winners of each group as well as each second-place team receive a bye directly into the second round of the single-elimination portion of the tournament. Third- and fourth-place teams must keep playing into the first round.

Here is how the Team USA schedule shapes up:

• Thursday, Feb. 12 — Team USA vs. Latvia

• Saturday, Feb. 14 — Team USA vs. Denmark

• Sunday, Feb. 15 — Team USA vs. Germany

All three Team USA group-play games will start at 9:10 p.m. local time at Milano Santa Giulia Ice Hockey Arena in Milan, Italy — a 16,000-seat arena built specifically for the Olympic hockey competition.

That start time for all three games will be 3:10 p.m. ET in the United States, 12:10 p.m. PT.

The location and start times of Team USA’s games in the elimination round will be determined once group play is complete. The single-elimination portion of the Olympic tournament opens on Tuesday, Feb. 17.

How to Watch Team USA on TV and Streaming

All three of the Team USA men’s ice hockey preliminary round games will be televised in the United States by, appropriately enough, USA Network, a cable channel owned by NBCUniversal. In Canada, Sportsnet will broadcast the games in English, while RDS (Réseau des sports) carries the broadcasts in French.

For hockey fans who would rather watch the Team USA games via online live streaming, the NBCUniversal-owned Peacock app will stream the games in the United States. In Canada, CBC Gem will carry the live stream of each game in English, with ICI TOU.tv streaming the Team USA men’s hockey games in French.
