The Toronto Blue Jays have something in mind for southpaw Eric Lauer.
The Blue Jays are getting ready to report to MLB Spring Training, with pitchers and catchers being the first to report on February 11, 2026. During the offseason, the Blue Jays brought aboard Dylan Cease and Cody Ponce to add to their rotation. That duo joins Kevin Gausman, Trey Yesavage, Shane Bieber, Jose Berrios, Bowden Francis, and Ricky Tiedemann as other potential members of their starting rotation.
Now, on the day before pitchers and catchers report, the Blue Jays revealed many things that will impact their 2026 rotation. One of these tidbits of news also explains why they were interested in Framber Valdez before he signed with the Detroit Tigers.
Toronto Blue Jays Name Eric Lauer’s Role For New Season
John Schneider spoke to the media on February 10th, 2026, via a Zoom call. During the call, he revealed their plan for Lauer and how he fits into the mix with the other rotation pieces.
“How we have planned…you have Cease, you have Gaus, you have Ponce, you got Trey,” Schneider said. “Lauer, we’re going to stretch out as a starter. Jose, we’re going to stretch out as a starter. He’s had a pretty productive offseason. Watched him throw today and was very encouraged.”
“Hopefully, Shane isn’t that far behind. We’re kind of in a unique spot where some of our depth is actually on our 26-man roster.”
Lauer played in 28 games during the 2025 regular season. He recorded 102 strikeouts and posted a 3.18 ERA to go along with a 1.11 WHIP and one hold in 104 2/3 innings of work. He was in the rotation for 15 games and played 13 out of the bullpen.
He followed up a solid season with a great postseason run. In five games, Lauer recorded eight strikeouts and one hold in eight 2/3 innings. Additionally, he finished with a 3.12 ERA and a 1.38 WHIP.
Losing Out on a Free Agent Paved the Way For Lauer
Before he signed with the Tigers, free agent southpaw Valdez was rumored to be of interest to the Blue Jays. Their interest made sense, given that everyone who was considered a lock for Toronto’s rotation was right-handed.
It would be foolish for the Blue Jays to enter 2026 with an all-right rotation. But, because things didn’t work out between Toronto and Valdez, Lauer has been presented with a golden opportunity.
Lauer can be the rotation’s weapon against left-handed hitters. This is especially helpful when the Blue Jays go up against a lefty-heavy batting order.
But how will Lauer fit into the rotation? That’s where Schneider’s comments come in, which deserve further observation.
Blue Jays Injuries to Pitchers Create Opportunity
Schneider spoke of a few injury-related items during his media availability. Namely, that Bieber is experiencing forearm fatigue and will miss the beginning of the season, though they have not established a timeline for return.
And then there is Francis, who will miss the entire season due to reconstructive surgery. Losing out on Francis for the year eats away at their depth, but that is where Tiedemann can potentially become a factor.
Potential Blue Jays 2026 Opening Day Rotation
Given how highly Schneider spoke of Berrios’ offseason, it’s fair to expect him to be in the rotation. There are two different options for the Blue Jays’ rotation.
Five-Man Rotation:
- Cease
- Gausman
- Berrios
- Lauer
- Yesavage
This five-man rotation has Ponce as the long arm in the bullpen. If Berrios looks as good as Schneider makes him out to be, the Blue Jays will want him in the rotation, where he has spent his entire career. However, there is another option that could be more beneficial in the long-term.
Six-Man Rotation:
- Cease
- Gausman
- Berrios
- Lauer
- Ponce
- Yesavage
A six-man rotation could prove beneficial. Injuries happen all of the time, and having a rotation of six starters could be the best approach to handling those injuries. If the injuries pile up, then going back down to the standard five-man rotation is perfectly reasonable.
However, the biggest benefit to a six-man rotation will come during the postseason. By easing their starters’ workload during the regular season, they have more left in the tank when it matters most.
The Blue Jays’ rotation will be one major storyline to follow as the season ramps up.
