What Is the Seahawks Super Bowl Record & History?

The Seahawks have played in the Super Bowl three times and have one win and two losses.

Here are Seattle’s results, year by year:

  • Super Bowl XL (2005 season): Lost to Steelers, 21-10
  • Super Bowl XLVIII (2013 season): Beat Broncos, 43-8 (won first title)

  • Super Bowl XLIX (2014 season): Lost to Patriots, 28-24

Super Bowl XL: Seahawks fall to Steelers in 2006 (21-10)

Seattle’s first Super Bowl appearance came after the 2005 season, with the game played on Feb. 5, 2006 in Detroit. The Seahawks, coached by Mike Holmgren, lost 21-10 to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

That result left the Seahawks 0-1 all-time in Super Bowls at the time, and started a long gap before Seattle returned to the big stage.

If you’re looking for the “numbers” snapshot, that loss was a -11 margin, and Seattle scored just 10 points. It was also one of the most controversial Super Bowls officiated in NFL history

Super Bowl XLVIII: Seahawks win first Lombardi by crushing the Broncos (43-8)

Seattle’s Super Bowl breakthrough arrived eight years later. In Super Bowl XLVIII (played Feb. 2, 2014), the Seahawks dominated the Denver Broncos 43-8 to claim the first Super Bowl title in franchise history.

That game is still remembered as one of the most lopsided championship performances of the modern era: Seattle’s defense overwhelmed a Denver offense that entered the postseason with massive hype, and the Seahawks sprinted to a runaway win.

The Seahawks’ Super Bowl MVP was linebacker Malcolm Smith.

The win swung Seattle’s all-time Super Bowl record from 0-1 to 1-1, and the 35-point final margin (43-8) is one of the largest in Super Bowl history.

Super Bowl XLIX: Patriots beat Seahawks 28–24 in a classic finish

Seattle returned immediately the next season and played New England in Super Bowl XLIX on Feb. 1, 2015 in Glendale, Arizona. The Patriots won 28-24, leaving the Seahawks one yard short of repeating as champions.

Most fans remember the ending: with Seattle threatening at the goal line in the final seconds, Malcolm Butler intercepted a pass in the end zone to seal the Patriots’ victory.

That defeat dropped Seattle to 1-2 all-time in Super Bowls, where the franchise record still sits today.

What changed for Seattle after its Super Bowl run

The Seahawks’ back-to-back trips after the 2013 and 2014 seasons also marked the high point of the Pete Carroll era, when Seattle paired an explosive, run-heavy offense with a defense that could dictate games. After Super Bowl XLIX, the Seahawks stayed competitive and continued to reach the playoffs multiple times, but they never returned to the Super Bowl again in that decade. The NFL’s margin for error is tiny, and repeating is notoriously difficult, especially once roster depth thins and key players’ contracts get more expensive. For Seattle, the story of its Super Bowl history is still defined by a dominant championship peak, followed by years of chasing a second title.
