Rory McIlroy’s Pebble Beach Breakthrough

McIlroy’s 2025 victory at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am wasn’t just another trophy; it felt like a turning point. Entering Sunday alongside a group of European Ryder Cup standouts, McIlroy separated himself with a dominant back nine, highlighted by a jaw-dropping display of power on the par-5 14th that effectively sealed the tournament. He closed with rounds of 66-70-65-66 to capture his 27th PGA Tour win, calling Pebble Beach one of golf’s “cathedrals” afterward.

“There’s a few what I would call ‘cathedrals of golf,’” McIlroy said in 2025, after his win. “Here, Augusta, St. Andrews, obviously. Maybe a few more you could add in there. And I had a big fat zero on all of those going in here. So to knock one off of Pebble is very cool.”

The win came in a dramatic duel that also featured longtime Ryder Cup teammate Justin Rose, who mounted a late charge of his own, finishing strong with a hole-out eagle but ultimately falling three shots short. For McIlroy, the Pebble Beach triumph proved to be the spark for a historic run; setting the tone for the season and foreshadowing what would become a defining year in his career.

Quick History of the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am

Long before it became a PGA Tour marquee stop, the event began in 1937 as a celebrity-driven pro-am hosted by entertainer Bing Crosby–the tournament that fans still affectionately remember as the “Crosby Clambake.” It started in Southern California (Rancho Santa Fe) and later shifted up the coast, eventually settling into its enduring Monterey Peninsula identity after World War II.

By 1947, the tournament had moved to Pebble Beach and the surrounding courses, and it evolved into the tradition fans recognize today: elite pros competing alongside amateurs on some of golf’s most iconic seaside layouts. Over time, it grew into a true four-round test, and the rotation of host courses became part of the tournament’s charm and challenge.

The event’s modern era was cemented when AT&T became title sponsor in 1986, a relationship that has helped keep Pebble Beach one of the longest-running signature partnerships on the PGA Tour calendar.

In 2024, Wyndham Clark delivered one of the most memorable rounds in tournament history, firing a third-round 60 to surge from a tie for 23rd into the lead while setting the all-time scoring record at Pebble Beach Golf Links.

That was also the year the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am officially became a Signature Event on the Tour. It brought in a reimagined format, including a reduced field, no cut, and amateurs playing only in the first two rounds.
