Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen has come within a game of the Super Bowl twice in his career, but is still waiting for his first trip to the big game.
But the chances of finally breaking through could be getting slimmer by the year, an analyst warns. Fox Sports commentator Colin Cowherd sounded a warning about the team’s precarious salary cap situation, which he believes will limit the chances of reaching the Super Bowl for the remainder of Allen’s career in Buffalo.
Super Bowl Window Closing
Cowherd addressed both Allen and Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson this week, saying both teams are heavily invested in quarterbacks and will face challenges building a Super Bowl caliber roster around them.
Cowherd warned that the Bills could have a closing Super Bowl window.
“Both quarterbacks not only have massive cap hits, we saw Josh Allen in a boot,” Cowherd said. “If I had to bet, will Josh Allen get to a Super Bowl? It would be a yes but I think they would be an underdog and I don’t think they would win because of the cap hit.”
Allen was in a walking boot at the team’s press conference introducing Joe Brady as head coach last week, but told reporters that he would have been able to play in the Super Bowl if the Bills had advanced. The Bills quarterback played the final four weeks of the season with a broken bone in his foot.
In an appearance on âCBS Sports HQâ this week, Allen said he underwent a small procedure and would be healed up soon.
âDoing good still in a boot, I got some stitches in it, wasnât a crazy surgery, so not too much recovery time, looking forward to getting back to full health soon,â Allen said.
Bills Could Build Contender Around Josh Allen
The Bills signalled their own concern about Allen’s Super Bowl window after their crushing loss to the Denver Broncos in the divisional round. Owner Terry Pegula fired head coach Sean McDermott, citing concerns that the team couldn’t get over the hump.
Some insiders suggest the Bills will make some more significant roster moves this offseason, including speculation of a trade for Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Justin Jefferson.
Jefferson sparked his own speculation during an appearance on the âSports Seriouslyâ podcast where he praised Brady, who was his former coach at LSU.
âHeâs already been doing a phenomenal job behind the scenes,â Jefferson said. â⦠Heâs a great coach. Having him as my offensive coordinator [at LSU] my 2019 year, we had so much fun together just building and working on our craft.”
Jefferson also credited Brady with helping boost his NFL draft stock.
âI feel like he was mostly the reason why I got picked first round,” Jefferson said. “Heâs the reason why my hands got better, why a lot of things occurred during that season, so Iâm just proud of him to go from the (New Orleans) Saints to LSU and now heâs back in the league and about to be a head coach.”
