Redwood City: Authorities investigating after woman dies in garage fire

REDWOOD CITY — A woman was found dead early Friday following a fire that broke out in a detached garage being used as a residence in North Fair Oaks, authorities said.

The fire was reported at 4:36 a.m. in the 600 block of Hurlingame Avenue, according to a news release from the Redwood City Fire Department and San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office.

Responding firefighters — composed of personnel from Redwood City and Menlo Park — arrived to find a detached garage “heavily involved” in flames and knocked down the fire within about 15 minutes. The main residence associated with the garage sustained smoke damage but the fire was otherwise isolated to the point of origin.

Firefighters searching the garage found a 31-year-old woman inside. Authorities said attempts to resuscitate her were unsuccessful and she was pronounced dead at the scene. Her name was not publicly released.

Two other occupants of the garage got out safely and were not injured, according to the news release.

In response to the death, the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office, District Attorney investigators, and the county coroner’s office were summoned to the site.

The sheriff’s office said surrounding streets were expected to be closed for much of Friday while authorities examine the scene.
