Miami Lands QB Darian Mensah After Duke Settlement

Duke quarterback Darian Mensah turned the college football world on its head when he entered the transfer portal just hours before it closed on Jan. 16. The move came out of nowhere, but his next destination quickly felt like a formality.

“I’m forever grateful for Duke and the coaching staff. Thank you Duke family for everything. This wasn’t an easy decision, but after talking with my family, I believe it’s in my best interest to enter the transfer portal,” Mensah posted on X.

After a drawn-out process that involved an eventual settlement between Mensah and Duke, the Miami Hurricanes have landed the Blue Devils quarterback out of the portal, according to On3’s Hayes Fawcett and Pete Nakos.

Mensah now becomes the Hurricanes’ third transfer quarterback addition in the last three years, following Cam Ward and Carson Beck. But unlike those previous portal pursuits, Mensah’s path to Miami came with a much messier finish.

A reported two-year, $4 million NIL agreement Mensah signed with Duke after transferring from Tulane last season became the sticking point. Duke attempted to block his ability to leave by taking the matter to court.

Duke Was Denied From Keeping Darian Mensah From Entering Transfer Portal

Shortly after Mensah announced his intent to transfer, Duke filed a lawsuit against him for damages. The first major development came when the Blue Devils requested a temporary restraining order to prevent Mensah from entering the portal and enrolling elsewhere, according to ESPN’s Pete Thamel.

Duke was granted the TRO, which kept Mensah from transferring or enrolling at another school. However, he still had to be entered into the transfer portal.

A hearing was scheduled for Feb. 2, though the situation appeared headed toward a settlement well before then. Miami Herald’s Barry Jackson reported that discussions were underway between Mensah and Duke on Jan. 25, with Miami not directly involved in the negotiations.

“There are ongoing discussions but UM is not involved in those negotiations, a source said,” Jackson reported. “The hope, from a UM standpoint, is that Duke and Mensah can reach financial settlement before a judge ruling on Thursday (January 29). Admission to spring classes closed at UM last week, but I suspect there will be a way to get Mensah enrolled at Miami this month. He hopes to get clearance to enroll at UM ASAP — he doesn’t have permission legally to do that yet.”

Mensah arrived at the University of Miami campus on Monday, Jan. 26, per 247Sports’ Gaby Urrutia. He was followed by his Blue Devils’ top receiver, Cooper Barkate.

Miami Lands Duke WR Cooper Barkate

Miami’s portal win didn’t stop at quarterback.

In addition to adding Mensah, the Hurricanes also added his top target at Duke, wide receiver Cooper Barkate.

Barkate entered the portal shortly after Mensah, fueling speculation that the two would end up at the same destination. That’s exactly how it played out, giving Miami another proven weapon heading into 2026.

Barkate is a four-star transfer and is ranked as the No. 25 wide receiver in the portal and a top-100 overall player, according to 247Sports.

“Before playing together at Duke, Mensah and Barkate were at Tulane and Harvard, respectively. So if you talk about Miami taking them from Duke, remember Duke took them from somewhere else, too,” The Athletic’s Chris Vannini said.

In his lone season at Duke, Barkate totaled 72 receptions for 1,106 yards and seven touchdowns.

With Mensah set to take over behind center, Barkate now joins a Miami offense that already features last season’s breakout freshman wide receiver Malachi Toney, a deep running back room starting with Mark Fletcher Jr., and a roster built to stay in the national title picture.
