76ers’ VJ Edgecombe Makes Important NBA All-Star Weekend Decision

In the Philadelphia 76ers’ 113-104 comeback win over the Indiana Pacers on Monday, VJ Edgecombe rocked the basketball with his right hand and posterized a Pacers defender in a play that left the fans at Xfinity Mobile Arena in awe.

The dunk wasn’t particularly the deciding factor in the 76ers’ win, but it instantly became the No. 1 highlight of his young NBA career.

The slam came in the third quarter, while Joel Embiid carried the heavy lifting with 30 points and nine rebounds, and Tyrese Maxey chipped in 29 points and eight assists. Edgecombe’s jaw-dropping throwdown — that had more than 18,000 fans on their feet — ultimately stole the show.

“You must have dunked on someone,” Embiid joked as media swarmed Edgecombe’s locker, via ESPN. “I haven’t seen this many people around you since you got drafted.”

It shouldn’t surprise fans who follow him closely — Edgecombe ranked in the top 10 at the draft combine with a 38.5-inch max vertical leap.

NBA Community Reacts To ‘Posterizer’ Edgecombe

The Baylor product has made an immediate impact for the 76ers: he scored 34 points in his NBA debut against the Boston Celtics and is now one of only three rookies this season with at least 10 games of 20-plus points.

Edgecombe expected to be sore Tuesday morning, but he said he’d be ready to suit up against the Phoenix Suns on Tuesday. And while this jam has already gone double viral, he claims it wasn’t even his best of the season.

”I’ve dunked on Jo in practice before,” he laughed at Embiid, “I don’t know if you’ve got any clips, though.”

The 6-foot-4 guard took a Maxey feed from beyond the arc, drove the lane, and soared high above 6-foot-10 Pacers center Tony Bradley. He was fouled on the play but missed the free throw. “That hurt,” Edgecombe admitted. “I landed too hard. It feels good to dunk on somebody, but it hurt because I landed bad.”

The dunk and his early-season performance have only intensified chatter around Edgecombe and the upcoming NBA All-Star Weekend;  fans are clamoring to see his participation in the events at the Inuit Dome in Los Angeles next month.

76ers’ Dunk Contest Contender?

Despite the theatrics, Edgecombe says don’t expect a repeat next month at All-Star Weekend. Even with plays like this pushing the Sixers toward the thick of the Eastern Conference playoff race, he’s politely declining a dunk contest invitation if asked.

“Nah, I’m good,” Edgecombe told reporters.

Off the court, Edgecombe remains grounded. He’s embraced a leadership role among the Sixers’ young talent while maintaining a focus on conditioning and skill development.

He’s also playing the second-most minutes on the team (35.8) behind Maxey, so who could blame him for wanting to enjoy the break in mid-February?

The 76ers sit fifth in the Eastern Conference at 23-18, and host the Suns at 7 pm ET on Tuesday in Philadelphia. They’ll look for Edgecombe to continue delivering off the bounce, and help rattle off a trio of home-court wins in the week ahead.
