Ever since the Baltimore Ravens released John Harbaugh on Tuesday, January 6, he’s been one of the most sought-after head coach candidates on the market. The New York Giants had immediate interest in signing him to take over as head coach, but with so many suiters, it certainly wasn’t a given.
Harbaugh reportedly met with New York Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart on Wednesday, January 14, making it an even bigger bet that he was leaning to coming to New York. Dart, the No. 25 overall pick of the 2025 draft, appeared in 14 games with 12 starts as a rookie for the Giants. He finished the season having completed 63.7 percent of his passes for 2,272 yards clocking 15 touchdowns and five interceptions, according to ESPN research.
“Via NFL Media, Jaxson Dart was in the building and met with Harbaugh during the coach’s interview on Wednesday,” NBC Sports reported on Wednesday.
But, on top of that development, now, two insiders are reporting that Harbaugh is one step away from officially signing with the New York Giants.
John Harbaugh One Step Away From Being the New York Giants’ Head Coach
While Harbaugh was in New York on Wednesday, there has been talk that his search for a new home is going far and wide. According to NBC Sports, “multiple reports indicate that Harbaugh is still currently expected to meet with the Titans and Falcons about their vacancies this week before potentially taking any more meetings or making a decision about his destination.”
But, that may have changed late Wednesday. Right before midnight, Paul Schwartz of the New York Post shared, “All signs point to John Harbaugh becoming the next head coach of the Giants, the Post has learned.”
“All signs point” is affirmative, and Schwartz is a longtime insider who doesn’t drum up these ideas. If he’s saying this publicly, it’s for real.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter also reported the New York Giants news, stating, “John Harbaugh and the Giants are working to finalize an agreement to make him New York’s next head coach and, barring a setback, a deal is expected, multiple sources tell ESPN. The deal is not final and contract numbers still are being negotiated.”
According to his source, “There’s still is a lot to work through.” But, he says that “barring any setbacks, Harbaugh is ready to accept the Giants’ deal and the Giants are expected to hire him as soon as possible, per sources.”
More Signs John Harbaugh is Heading to the New York Giants
This is in line with recent developments, too. ESPN’s Dan Graziano reported Wednesday that there’s lots of talk about the New York Giants “not letting him out of the building,” but that Harbaugh has tentative plans to meet with Tennessee Titans officials in Baltimore on Thursday, January 15.
“As of now, Harbaugh has tentative plans to meet with Titans officials in Baltimore on Thursday. Lots of chatter about Giants ‘not letting him out of the building,’” Graziano said. “Possible things move quickly with NYG and change other plans, but as of now, again, his plan is to go home tonight.”
That message came after a similar report from The Athletic’s Dianna Russini, who stated on X, “John Harbaugh will fly out of Teterboro airport very soon back to his home, where he is scheduled to meet with the Tennessee Titans decision makers on Thursday, sources tell me. The meeting will serve as a formal in-person interview with the Titans at Harbaugh’s residence.”
Whether or not Harbaugh meets with the Titans, it’s becoming more clear than ever that the Giants are willing to do whatever it takes to sign him.
