NFL Hits Eagles Starter With Massive Fine Before Playoffs

There might not be a player on the Philadelphia Eagles roster more looking forward to playoff bonus money than safety Sydney Brown.

Brown’s wallet took another hit on the eve of the Eagles’ playoff opener when the NFL Game Day Accountability committee tagged Brown with a whopping, $46,371 fine on Saturday, January 10, for illegal use of his helmet in a Week 18 loss to the Washington Commanders.

It was the second time in the final 3 weeks of the regular season the NFL fined Brown, following a fine for $8,432 for fighting against the Buffalo Bills in Week 17.

Brown is making just $1.281 million this season. He earned his fine against the Commanders for a hit on tight end Ben Sinnott in the second quarter that appeared pretty harmless on the surface.

“Listen, I hate Sydney Brown and think he’s a reckless dangerous player,” Eagles fan Dan Baxter wrote on X with a video clip of the play in question attached. “But this is just an average tackle.”

Brown has been criticized for being out of control in the past.

“Sydney Brown plays football like Bobby Boucher,” DJ Slayer Relic wrote on X.

The Eagles open their Super Bowl title defense against the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Wild Card Round on Sunday, January 11.

Rookie’s Injury Pressed Brown Into Starting Role

Brown played in all 17 games for the Eagles with 3 starts and was pressed into more service following a devastating, season-ending injury to star rookie safety Andrew Mukuba, who fractured his ankle in a 24-21, Week 12 loss to the Dallas Cowboys.

Mukuba, a 2025 second round pick (No. 64 overall), had started 10 of 11 games with 46 tackles, 2 interceptions, 3 pass deflections and 3 TFL. Brown finished the season with 34 tackles and 3 pass deflections.

“Eagles rookie safety Andrew Mukuba suffered an ankle fracture that will require surgery, per sources,” ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler wrote on his official X account on Monday, November 24. “Mukuba — who has stood out in Philly’s secondary — is working through next steps, but his season is in jeopardy.”

Mukuba Made Big Impression Early for Eagles

Mukuba, 5-foot-11 and 186 pounds, was an All-ACC pick at Clemson before transferring to Texas for his final college season in 2024, where he earned All-SEC honors as the Longhorns made the College Football Playoff for the first time.

He made a big impression early with a 75-yard interception return for a touchdown against the Cleveland Browns in a preseason game then doubled down in Week 2 with a clutch interception and 41-yard return in a Week 2 Super Bowl rematch against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Mukuba may be counted on to put the Eagles safeties on his back in 2026 as fellow starter Reed Blankenship could leave in free agency.

“This wasn’t a pretty game by the Philadelphia Eagles, and they found themselves in a very tough position early in the fourth quarter,” Bleacher Report’s Sobleski wrote on September 14. “Then, rookie safety Andrew Mukuba made the play of the game. The Kansas City Chiefs were on the doorstep of a go-ahead touchdown when the ball bounced out of the arms of Travis Kelce. Mukuba plucked it out of the air and returned it 41 yards. Philadelphia scored on the ensuing drive to take a 10-point lead and essentially put the game out of reach.”
