The Bay Area has some of the most dangerous roads in California, where high traffic volumes, driving speeds, complex intersections and weather conditions all increase the risk of fatal accidents.
Bay Area News Group analyzed the most recent data available from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in California from 2002 to 2022, the most recent period available, to see which state and local roads recorded the most traffic deaths in the Bay Area. These are the 40 roadways with the most fatalities over that 20-year period, according to the NHTSA’s Fatality Analysis Reporting System.
