Giants Still Have Aaron Rodgers Plan After $8M Jameis Winston Deal

The New York Giants found a quarterback after signing Jameis Winston in 2025 NFL free agency, but that doesn’t still have a plan for Aaron Rodgers.

Winston’s deal with the Giants was confirmed on Friday, March 21 by NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, who quickly noted the move “doesn’t preclude them from making additional QB moves.”

Pelissero’s colleague Mike Garafolo offered more specifics on any additional decisions at quarterback. He reported “this does not change the #Giants’ pursuit of Aaron Rodgers or alter any other possible QB routes. Just getting a veteran QB under contract in a QB room that only had Tommy DeVito coming into the day.”

While signing Rodgers may still be on the table, the Giants at least covered themselves. They did so by signing Winston on the same day Rodgers visited with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Jameis Winston Helped the Giants Finally Take Action

Winston may not be the marquee name many hoped for, but at least the 31-year-old represents the Giants finally taking action at football’s most important position. He’s still got an arm as strong as most around the league, and Winston’s never afraid to use it, no matter the coverage.

The Giants won’t mind his gung-ho bravado if they get the good version of the No. 1 pick in the 2015 NFL draft. That’s the version who threw 14 touchdowns and just three interceptions in only seven games for the New Orleans Saints during the 2021 season.

Winston thrived four years ago because he had the advantage of head coach Sean Payton’s play designs and play calling. The “secret sauce” worked wonders for a quarterback who has been boom or bust since entering the pros.

No season better encapsulates the duality of Winston than 2019. He threw for 5,109 yards and 33 touchdowns. All good, right? Well, except for those pesky 30 interceptions.

The Giants clearly aren’t worried about the rollercoaster of having Winston in the mix. At least based on their pursuit of and decisive action to sign the player who showed flashes of brilliance for the Cleveland Browns last season.

Winston visited with the Giants on Tuesday and must have made a positive impression. Whether it was positive enough to deter general manager Joe Schoen from still going after Rodgers is the lingering question.

Aaron Rodgers Question Still Lingers for Giants

The will he, won’t he saga of Rodgers and his next destination has long since past the point of becoming tiresome. Teams need the 41-year-old to make up his mind, but Rodgers knows he has leverage.

Namely, the four-time NFL MVP has the luxury of patiently waiting for the best offer from the best situation. That heady combination could rule the Giants out, despite a plan to woo Rodgers with the presence of dynamic wide receiver Malik Nabers.

The latter is part of an exciting supporting cast boosted further by another free agent deal for a natural “downfield threat.” Weapons like these are now at Winston’s disposal, but a sudden decision from Rodgers would change the picture again.

Perhaps Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll would be better off closing the door on Rodgers, sticking with Winston and turning to the draft. Especially when the Giants seemingly already have a favorite QB in this class.
