The city of Malibu has approved $4.1 million for the construction of a new skate park set to open this fall, officials announced Tuesday.
Malibu City Council members recently authorized the funds for the 12,500-square-foot project, which will be built by C.S. Legacy Construction, Inc.
The design was overseen by California Skateparks, a firm specializing in the design and construction of skate parks and action sports facilities. Officials said the design was also guided by extensive public meetings and surveys conducted in 2020 and 2021.
The skate park will feature stairs, rails, ledges, banks, a flow bowl, quarter pipes, spine, extensions and waterfalls for skaters of all skill levels, officials said.
“This skate park is more than just a recreational facility — it will be a gathering place that will foster community, promote healthy lifestyles and embrace Malibu’s deep-rooted skate culture,” Mayor Doug Stewart said in a statement. “We look forward to watching generations of skaters enjoy this incredible new space.”
According to city officials, construction will begin in April with completion anticipated by the fall. The city’s temporary stake park will remain open until the permanent facility is open.
In 2019, the City Council approved the use of a property located at Malibu Bluffs Park for the temporary skate park.
The new skate park is still in the process of being named. City staff are expected to present proposals to the City Council in the coming months.
