California’s efforts to promote environmentally friendly transportation are about to get a boost, with the release of another round of incentives to offset the cost of buying an electric bike. The incentives are intended to make e-bikes more accessible, especially for residents in low-income communities who need more affordable ways to get around.
The California Air Resources Board (CARB) launched the California E-Bike Incentive Project in late 2024. It aims to support residents who may struggle with transportation costs by helping to offset the cost of buying an electric bike with vouchers of up to $2,000.
The first round of vouchers was released in December and all 1,500 were gone in about an hour. The state has said applications for the next round will open soon.
Who qualifies for an e-bike voucher?
To qualify for California’s e-bike incentives, applicants must:
- Be 18 or older
- Live in California
- Meet income eligibility requirements (typically 300% or less of the Federal Poverty Level)
- Plan to purchase an e-bike from an approved retailer
Priority is often given to individuals living in disadvantaged communities or areas identified as air quality improvement zones.
E-bike makers have been helping to educate consumers about the new incentives, including Rad Power Bikes, which has locations in Huntington Beach, San Diego, Santa Barbara and Berkeley.
How to apply for an e-bike voucher
The application process is straightforward, but—just like the last round—demand is likely to far outpace the number of vouchers available. Interested residents should visit CARB’s website to find the latest information on when the application window opens and to sign up for program updates. The application process generally involves submitting proof of income, residency, and identification.
Once approved, recipients will receive a voucher that can be redeemed directly at participating bike shops or online retailers. Funds are applied at the time of purchase, reducing upfront costs.
