Half a dozen ambulances were called to the scene of a fire that injured a firefighter who was briefly in distress late Friday morning in the Ukrainian Village neighborhood.
No one else was injured after the fire erupted at 2008 W. Thomas St., around 11:30 a.m. and a “Mayday,” or firefighter in distress, call was made minutes later, according to Chicago Fire Department spokesperson Larry Merritt.
“We’ve got a fire,” a dispatcher said over police radio. “Second floor in the rear.”
At least six ambulances were sent to the scene, where all occupants had escaped safely, according to Merritt.
The distress call was quickly secured and the firefighter was taken to Stroger Hospital for observation, Merritt said. It was not known what kind of injuries the firefighter suffered.
The fire was extinguished roughly half an hour later at the building, which sustained “some damage” but was not totaled, according to Merritt.
The cause of the fire wasn’t immediately known.
