Multi-car crash on Highway 24 in Orinda kills person

ORINDA — A crash involving many cars Friday morning near the Caldecott Tunnel killed a person, the California Highway Patrol said.

The wreck about 8:25 a.m. occurred on eastbound state Highway 24 just west of the Wilder Road exit. It was not known immediately how many cars were involved, but the CHP said it was possible as many as five vehicles were caught in the crash.

It was the second fatal crash Friday morning on wet Bay Area freeways.

The wreck blocked all lanes of Highway 24, and the CHP diverted traffic off at the Wilder Road off-ramp. They issued a Sig Alert for severe traffic that remained in effect past 10 a.m. and advised drivers to use alternate routes.

No other information was available immediately.
