Cop accidentally leaves gun in courthouse bathroom, sheriff’s office says

A Chicago police officer’s gun was found unattended in a courthouse bathroom Thursday morning at the Leighton Criminal Courthouse on the Southwest Side.

The firearm was found around 10 a.m. Thursday in a sixth floor women’s bathroom, the Cook County sheriff’s office said.

The incident was apparently an accident, according to a spokesperson for the sheriff’s office.

Deputies took possession of the gun and determined it belonged to a CPD officer, the sheriff’s office said. The officer was still in the building and the firearm was returned to them.

The Chicago Police Department launched an internal investigation into the incident.
