Stunning move: San Jose Sharks send Zetterlund to Ottawa Senators

SAN JOSE — The San Jose Sharks executed a stunning trade Friday, reportedly sending winger Fabian Zetterlund, minor league forward Tristen Robins and a fourth round draft pick to the Ottawa Senators for forwards Zach Ostapchuk, Noah Gregor and a 2025 second round draft pick.

Both Sportsnet and the Ottawa Sun reported the details of the trade.

Zetterlund, who turns 26 in August, was believed to be an important piece to the Sharks’ future. Following the Sharks’ game against the Colorado Avalanche on Thursday, the right-shot Zetterlund had 17 goals and 36 points this season.

Zetterlund is a pending restricted free agent in need of a new contract, as he’s in the final year of a two-year, $2.9 million deal he signed with the Sharks on July 1, 2023.

Per a source, the Sharks offered Zetterlund a new contract earlier this year, but Zetterlund’s camp wanted to wait until after the season. The Sharks recently circled back on contract extension talks, and Zetterlund’s camp countered with their own offer a few days ago.

It was unclear if that counteroffer played a role in Friday’s trade.

The 6-foot-4 Ostapchuk, a second-round pick by the Senators in 2021, is in his second full season as a professional. This year, he had 11 points in 15 games with Belleville of the AHL and four points in 43 games with the Senators, averaging just 9:20 in ice time.

Gregor, a fourth-round draft pick by the Sharks in 2016, is back for his second stint with the team.

Gregor, 26, played 17 games with the Sharks from 2019 to 2023 before becoming a restricted free agent. He was not given a qualifying offer by San Jose, and later signed a one-year deal as a free agent. Last July, he signed a one-year deal with the Senators and had six points in 40 games.
