CIF NorCal Open champ Archbishop Mitty hires former Marin Catholic volleyball coach Jake Spain to run program

Archbishop Mitty has a new girls volleyball coach, and the Monarchs didn’t have to look too far to find him.

Mitty announced Monday afternoon that Jake Spain, the former coach of Marin Catholic, has been named the Monarchs’ new coach ahead of the 2025 season in the fall. Spain is the current co-director of Absolute Volleyball Club in San Rafael, one of the premier volleyball clubs in Northern California.

Spain replaces Jon Wallace, who stepped down in January, citing a desire to spend more time with his family and watch his children play collegiate volleyball at Oklahoma and UC Santa Barbara. Wallace led Mitty to a CIF NorCal Open Division championship in 2024 before departing the program.

“We are thrilled to welcome Jake and his wife Brianna to our community. In addition to his proven track record, it is his ability to cultivate relationships with his student-athletes that really stands out,” Mitty athletic director Brian Eagleson said in a statement. “He possesses so many of the qualities which align with our mission: intentionality, integrity, and a belief that competition teaches lessons that transcend the court. We can’t wait to get him on campus to work with our players.”

Spain coached Marin Catholic from 2012-21, winning seven consecutive NCS championships and the NorCal Open title in 2019. Spain won the 2021 CIF Model Coach Award as well as the 2024 NCS Honor Coach award, which he won after coaching Redwood in 2023.

“I am incredibly grateful to Principal Caputo and Athletic Director Brian Eagleson for their trust and support throughout the hiring process,” Spain said in the release. “Their passion for the Archbishop Mitty volleyball program is evident, and I’m excited to work alongside such dedicated leaders to continue building a strong, successful team. I look forward to coaching such committed student-athletes and contributing to the legacy of excellence at Archbishop Mitty.”
