In Cicero’s primary, longtime Town President Larry Dominick fends off challenge from Esteban Rodriguez

Longtime Cicero Town President Larry Dominick won re-election Tuesday, defeating challenger Esteban Rodriguez and defending a post he has held since 2005.

With all precincts reporting, Dominick won 57.3% of the voted, while Rodriguez garnered 42.6%.

As Cicero’s municipal leader, Dominick has directed much of his attention at public safety, and has touted progress in reducing the western suburb’s street gang activity. He spent 20 years with the Cicero Police Department, including time as deputy superintendent.

Dominick has also overseen the groundbreaking of the town’s first disability-accessible park and an overhaul of the town’s senior programs.

Dominick ran uncontested in 2021 and 2017 — with just 80 votes cast for write-in candidates running against him in those two elections. He fended off two challengers in 2013, landing more than 58% of the vote, and garnered 64% of the vote when he beat two challengers in 2009.

Rodriguez stepped down in January as executive director of Corazón Community Services, a Cicero-based nonprofit. When he was younger, he told the Sun-Times, he benefited from a range of violence prevention, health and academic assistance initiatives offered by Corazón.

Rodriguez ran on the Cicero Residents United slate, which seeks to increase the town’s outreach to get information and services to residents. He also focused on immigration as an issue, accusing Dominick of making the town hostile to immigrants, specifically those without legal status.
